7mm Remington Mag and 150 gr Partition

That is essentially the velocity I observe, whether shooting 175 grain Partitions or 175 grain TBBC. The two powders that I routinely use are H870 (I'm down to my last three pounds, squirreled away for this specific purpose) and RL22. Either gives me the velocity and accuracy I seek with these bullets.

Scotty, I hate to gloat, but I have four pounds of H870 and 200 Nosler 175gr partitions from the pro shop that are waiting to be molded into elk killers for this fall.

Bruce,

That's just mean to make such a post. Funny, but mean.

I have three lbs of H870 for mine as well, along with a good stash of 175's as well!

Not sure if I will use it or not though. There are some powders that seems to do pretty well with the 175's and if RL33 hits the market, I would try it in a hearbeat. RL22 does work really well though... I am looking forward to what you get with yours Bruce. That H870 smells pretty good to my nose!

Back when I used the 7 mag a lot I used the H870 and 175 grainers with good luck, but when IMR 7828 came out I used a generous amount to get great groups and 2960 fps the with 175 Hornady. More than a few elk bit the dust with this one! Why did I ever stop using the 7??? Maybe I'll visit it again

That sounds like what I am looking for! Man, all this talk about the 175's is starting to get me a little excited to work with the old beast!

I know where there are 4 lbs for sale here in Cheyenne. They are in the old tin cans!

You have them Fotis? Can you secure them?

If I were below the line, I'd for sure grab that H870. It performs very well for me in quite a few cartridges.

I have one tin can that I don't count as useable. It has degraded badly. I called Hodgdon a while back and checked the age of the powder I have in plastic cannisters. It was made back in the 40s. That stuff is over 70 years old. But it still goes bang and seems pretty consistent.

Can I jump in here to ask, If H870 Powder is so good and I believe it is, Why then did they discontinue manufacturing the powder?

Don

I think it was an old Machine Gun Surplus powder Don. I don't think it was a special Hodgdon blend. I believe they just ran out of the stocks they had of it? I don't know for sure though. I imagine some of the surplus powders like W872 are pretty similar, but not the exact same. I am sure one of the others will fill it in. It was supposed to be kinda temp sensitive as well. Although, I never saw anything terribly bad about it in my use. That was a long time ago though. Boy, was it fast though..

H870 was surplus. One lot and that was it. A8700 came close to matching it, though not quite. Now that is discontinued as well.

I often was tempted to try US869 thinking it would be good in the 7 mag as well as my 300 RUM but never did. How close is US869 to H870 burn rate then?

Don

The burn rate of US869 approximates H870. However, it has not worked out for me in the 7RMs in which I've tested it.

Was it too slow Mike? Or accuracy problems?
