I am trying to duplicate the Winchester factory load in the 7mm WSM with 160gr Fail Safe.

I need the COL length and the powder charge in the 7mm WSM fail Safe load?

Thanks for any help

Jeff in Alaska

Jeff

wouldn't the published COL in the loading manuals give the same measurement. I am thinking the fail safe had a similar construction to the AccuBond, am I worng???? :?:

Jeff,

It is impossible to duplicate the factory load since factories have access to powders that are not available to us. Having said that, you should be able to duplicate the velocity of a factory load.
I would think that the COL would be to SAAMI spec.

Did you find a source for the discontinued 7mm 160 gr Fail Safe? I have a friend that has been looking for these bullets.

JD338

NEW WMR -- is the Winchester Magnum Rifle powder. Introduced in 1994, it's a good choice for 270 Win, 243 Win and 300 Win Mag and also can be used in 257 Roberts, 25-06, 280 Rem, and 338 Win Mag

This is your huckleberry btw. Inside tip if you please.

Yes I found my load with H4831SC at 63.0

With the older FS version before Nosler made them.......the bullets were a tad shorter.

I had some 7mm Mag factory loads with FS and just used that to determine my COL for the 7mm WSM COL.........worked great less than MOA at 100 yards.

Winchester used W760 powder in the 300 WSM and 7 WSM and special blend powders is what Fed and Hornady uses not Win.

Yes found 6 boxes of the older 160gr FS so I am set now!

Trying to find some 165gr FS bullets for my 300 Win Mag now!

WMR powder has been discountinued for some time now replaced by Supeme 780!

I still have one box of the 230gr FS's for my 338. They shot pretty well, but it seemed like performance was kind of sporadic sometimes since they were made for heavy game and smashing bones. I imagine the 7mm 160 would shoot through about anything in NA. Scotty

Yes they were made for heavy game..........alot hunters used them on Deer size with dissapontment...........but I bet the 150gr and 140gr FS shold have worked pretty good on deer!

Heck yeah, they were some tough bullets. Glad you are going to keep using them, I would like to hear how they work on game. I never used mine for anything but shooting through tree stumps! Scotty

I still have several boxes of 160 grain CT FSs for my 7 RM. I downed quite a few moose and black bear with that bullet. I note several boxes of 165 grain FSs for my 30-06. I think there are a few boxes of 180 grain FSs lying around as well. I generally had good success with the bullet. I have never tried them in my 7mm RM, though I shot quite a few 180 grain FSs early on in my first 300 WSM.

I can imagine they would be excellent on heavy game and would probably really not harm a ton of meat on deer sized game. Scotty

They work very well on the game I've taken. I used them because they were accurate in my rifles. I know there were some rifles, however, that just could not stabilize them.

I worked on a Colt Light Rifle for a guy in Alaska.

63 gr of RL22 gave 3050 fps and MOA groups. Worked well on game up there.

I always wanted to try a 180 grain in the 30-06. I assume that they are no longer being made? Then again the E-tip has filled that niche, Still planning on loading a 168 grain just to see.

Snowing in the high country tonight; starting to develope a bad case of "Elk Fever". Saw some tracks on Saturday that were a few days old, one big track that appeared to be a large bull (at least in body). My six and nine year old boys where with me everytime they spotted a new track I got the "Dad" Elk or "Dad" deer. Working on the boys finding the track makers and not just the tracks. Love my boys.

Terry,

That's great to hear your boys are excited to see the tracks. They'll be tagging deer soon enough and urging you to keep up with them.

Dr Mike

If it was up to them they would be tagging deer already; have to stick to tagging rabbits for a couple of years. Don't know if it was my wife or my kids that were more excited about getting a deer.

It is great to see them going with you, even if they are young. My children are all grown and gone, but I have some great memories of time spent in the field with each of them. I'm doing all I can to get my grandchildren closer so I can spend time with them in the mountains before I'm no longer able to hike the hills.

I own seven or eight boxes of the 7mm 160 grain Fail Safe bullets of the original design, but have never loaded up any.

I have been shooting Grand Slams, Mag Tips and CoreLokt for many years with great success. However, I am curious how they might perform in my 7mm Rem Mag at high velocity on elk.

Pecos,

Welcome aboard. I've shot the 160 grain FS in my 7mm RM for quite a few years. They performed very well on moose, mule deer and black bear. I have only used them once on elk, and they did what they were supposed to do. I did like these bullets. I purchased quite a few boxes of the 160 grain .284 as well as the 180 and 165 grain .308 bullets.

Welcome to the board Pecos. I would give RL 22 and or RL 25 some serious thought. Anything over 2900 fps and good accuracy is gravy in the big seven.
