Is a 7mm wsm Winchester Ultimate Shadow worth buying? I just found one at a Wal-mart and a Sportman's Wharehouse at a comparable price, but wasn't really sure about the round. Is it any better than the 7mm Rem Mag in any aspect? I know that I love the Model 70 action but I have heard that the Winchester's towards the end were of similar quality to the early post 64 Winchesters. I currently have the same rifle in 270 wsm and I am quite happy with it. I wasn't sure if it was the exception to the rule though. I also have the fear that this round might die off in a few years.

My dad has one in 270wsm also. It's not bad for the money needs a better trigger it still shoot really good with my reloads. I'm sure the 7mmwsm will be the same. A 7mm rem mag would be better in the long run alot more easy to find brass and dies. I don't think you can beat it
I'v hit 3400 fps with the 140 bt's I don't think you can dothat with the short mag.

Depends on the price. If its around $350-400, I'd go for it....

My dad had one in a 270 WSM and it shot great with 140g SST"s. The triger was re-worked by a smith down to 3lbs.

The 7 WSM is not going to outperform the 7 RM. It will however come close to matching the velocity, but in a shorter action.

I actually have a friend thats going to sell me his 7 WSM winchester shadow for $150 I dont think I can pass it up at that price. I'll be using mine for a truck gun for yotes/deer so I'll be loading up 140g NBT's at probly 3000-31000fps. Should be able to obtain 1" groups at 100 yards with the NBT's without to much trouble as well. Should be a good litle rifle.

Concerning the popularity. Yah it might not live forever, but it will be around for a litle while. I'd say stock pile on brass and you'll have enough to shoot out plenty of barrels....

Mind sharing that 7 RM load that hit 3400fps with 140's??? Seems kinda optimistic to me. Thats 7 STW territory....

I know, I know, Noslers book says 3350fps w/ RL -22. However, I've shot plenty of 140's through a couple different 7 RM's and have only been able to achieve 3250fps w/ RL-22, and thats going over book max quitea bit. My current load is 68.5g RL-22. I have a cronograph as well.

To tell ya the truth, I dont even know if there doing a true 3250fps. Based on my drop testing out to 800 yards, there only running about 3100fps!!!

I, personally, believe a 140NBT at 31000fps is beating the 7RemMag by a shade or two!

In all seriousness, most of the data I have seen for this cartridge shows it to be every bit the equal to the 7RemMag until you get up to the heaviest bullets. In my Lyman #48, this round is loaded particularly hot, and velocities actually equal the 7Wby, or at least 99% equal it, until you get up to above 160gr bullets. Of course, I would like to see it in my own rifle, versus on paper, if I owned a 7WSM. I must say that Lyman's data is pretty reliable so far, though, for the calibers I have, so maybe it is possible to squeeze it out a bit on 120, 140, 150 & 160gr loads than what you can consistently get from the 7RemMag.

I happen to think the 7WSM is the best of the bunch, as far as the shorts go. I know the 270WSM is a great round, but the 7 seems to have an edge over the RemMag where the 270WSM doesn't really.

I thought I might stir the nest on this one. My 7 mag is one from the late 60's and have longer throat's.I did some research and found a speer mamual from 1970 and read they had to reexamine older data and use a rifle with the tightest throat they could find.so off to work I went. I started with 140 bt and 66 gr's of rl19 and went up one grain at a time and found 70 grains to be max. It shot .75 to 1.0 at 100 yards wich made me happy. that being said I hope nobody blows thier head off.

The 7 WSM is really nothing more than a 280 Improved in a short action. I think the WSM's are great for medium loads. Once you start stretching them to the limit they will pulverize your shoulder. While I am not offended by the recoil, most people are.

The 7 WSM uses the same charge weights as the 280 Imp.. Personally, though my go-to hunting rig is a 7Wby shooting 150 Scirocco's @ 3200+, I have yet to find a hunting situation that my 280 Remington wouldn't address with authority.

So, yes a 7 WSM is a viable authoritative round. Many like it.

That oughta do some damage, if it makes it to the intended target!!

Just razzin ya a bit, everybody makes typos every now and again!

I should be picking up my new 7 WSM here in the next few days. Gotta wait till pay day. Only scope I have laying around is a Leupold vx2, 3-9. That'll have to work for now...

Yeah, I just couldn't resist the jab, R-Man! Hope you get that 7WSM singing for you in no time. I bet you find it to be every bit the equal of the 7RemMag until you get up to 175gr pills. If you don't have it, you should consider getting the Lyman #48, as it has some of the most impressive data for that cartridge I have seen, putting it on a par with the 7Wby.

I will have a 7WSM one day, just because I want one, although with a 270Wby, and my brother's 270Win, it doesn't really fill a hole in my caliber selection. I want one just because I think it's a neat cartridge, and it probably works great for everything I'd ever hunt. Might build a custom heavy barrel gun in 7WSM, with a 25 or 26" tube on it. Got to thinking about it last night, sort of a walking varminter gun, but for big game. Have to flute the barrel and shave every ounce off the action I could, though, to get the weight down. Hmmmm...Now if I could just convince the wife I really need it...

Actually I was wondering about the rifle itself not the caliber. The info posted is appreciated anyways. I like to hear that the wsm's are so well liked. I can throw that in all of my friends faces that say they don't see them being around in a couple years simply because they aren't a 30-06. I don't think I will get this one yet but I would like to have one of each.
