Thinking about this round. Please tell me everything you know about it. Thinking about building a deer rifle for hunting where shots of 400-500 yards are possible.

The cartridge flat works. Love mine. Hard to say which is more appreciated in my neck of the woods--the 7mm WSM or the 270 WSM. Love them both. Easy to load and easy to use.

You don’t know how badly I’ve lusted for a 7mmwsm. Have been loading 300WSM for my son... love it, and just thinking what a nice cartridge it would be with all those 7mm bullets out there! Definitely on the bucket list!

I have used:

150 grain E-Tip with 72.5 g. Retumbo and WLRM

150 grain Swift Scirocco with 62.0 g. H4350 and WLRM

160 grain Swift A-Frame with 70.0 g. RL25 and CCI200

160 grain CT Fail Safe with 65.5 g. R905 and CCI200

Each of these gave me sub-MOA accuracy and velocities that were well within expected range.

My working loads are:

160 grain AB with 69.0 g. MagPro and WLRM

160 grain Sierra HPBT with 60.0 g. H4350 and R 9 1/2M

160 grain PT with 65.4 g. IMR7828 and WLRM

Each of these give me accuracy measured between 0.3 MOA and 0.6 MOA. I can attest that these will readily bring down a deer, doing so quite smartly.

Great cartridge IMO. I currently shoot a custom rifle in 7WSM and find it to be just about right for everything from whitetails to elk. Low recoil and high precision with adequate energy at the distances I typically hunt (<500 yds).
The only down side is the lack of high quality brass. However, Win factory brass is capable of producing sub .5moa with a little standard case preparation.

the 7WSM was probably the best designed and most optimal of the WSM cases but its delay in releases and issues with changing the case slightly to prevent chambering in 2700 and 300 WSMs caused it to languish(Winchester isn't even chambering it anymore). I rebuilt a Model 70 Ultimate Shadow with new stock, bottom metal and follower that just flat shot. 139,154 and 175 hornadys shot best. IMR 4350 and 4831 were my best performers, good fill, decent speed and generally always available.

DrMike: is the R905 the Rottweil powder?

Yes.

Thanks guys. This project may take a while to complete but I'm kinda thinking about rebarreling my Tikka. Put it in a nice stock and add a nice scope for hunting. From there, it would be my out west deer rifle.

Now to pick a barrel and smith to do the work. This is new territory for me so I don't want to mess it up.

Yes.
Wasn't aware they are available in your area. Here they are quite expensive, but good quality
We have major problems with some US-powders due to a EU Regulation. They are off the market

I managed to pick up a supply some years ago. I still have somewhere around 1.5 Kg that I use for specific loads. I also have a good supply of Rottweil brass for my 9.3X64 and a few other European cartridges for which I load.

9,4x64 is a great caliber.
Too much for my hunting - still great.
If you need cases let me know and I will take a look how I get them to you

I'm well supplied, having specially ordered 200 cases some years ago. And, yes, the 9.3X64 is a great cartridge that is on the order of the 375 H&H. It works exceptionally well on large game such as grizzly, moose and elk.

Mike is the one who got me into mine and his sentiments are exactly as his.

Mine should have a new McMillan coming for it in a few days. I have kinda sidelined it in favor of lighter rifles these days, but with the new stock, it might be making a comeback.

Since starting the post, I'm leaning more and more towards a 7wsm. Looking at bullets and the 160 AccuBond and 175 Partition look great. I read a lot about the ELD-x but I'm not sold on it as a hunting bullet yet. If I could get the 160 Accubonds shooting, I don't think any animal I plan on hunting will be able to shake off a good hit.

As far as brass, it looks like Winchester is the only way to go at this point. I plan on buying 200-250 pieces when I buy so I have the same lot through out the life of the barrel.

I have H4831, IMR4350, H4350, RL22, and IMR7828 on hand so I should be good with powder.

Is there any reason to get a different set of dies other than RCBS 2-die set?

H4831 and 7828 are excellent in my 7wsm.

I use WW brass but I anneal it as soon as I get it because I’ve had necks crack on brand new I fired brass. I actually started buying 300 wsm brass, forming a false shoulder for crush fit and fire forming.

I’ve not tried Hornady 7wsm brass but WW has been poor lately.

Should say new unfired brass.

The last bag of WW brass I bought I threw away 5-6 pieces because the necks were split while still in the bag.

On the 300 brass I size the necks so it will slightly crush fit in my rifle and load 140 sierras over 59grs imr4350. They’ll beat a 6” round plate to death at 400yds
