While in Phoenix last weekend chatting with a couple of forum members, many subjects came up one of which tweeked my interest. I have found that one can buy a AR-15 lower (over the counter), do some minor finishing, and with easily obtainable parts build a complete rifle. It's a very interesting concept. Like other products however I am sure that these components vary in quality. I was wondering if anyone here has done this, and could provide me with some insight as to which products are the best quality and where I might look for them. Thanks all!!!!!

I know PTG has milling kits with the appropriate mills and drills. The work can be done with a nice drill press and mill vise. Then you have a undocumented lower - legal for you but not transferable.
I've thought about it. If "THEY" come for your guns it wouldn't be on their list. 8)

It's perfectly legal so "they" can't do anything about it. It's better if it isn't documented when "they" come for it anyway, provided it's not with the others, then your still armed.

I've seen these, and while it does seem interesting, I think they're a gimmick playing on people's fears. If someone knocks on your door and says "our records show you have firearms in your home with these serial numbers, and we'd like to come in and have a look". Your answer should be. "Sorry, I sold those without a paper trail to someone from this state, which is perfectly legal." And do you have a search warrant?" There's no way "they" are going to get a search warrant for every gun owner in America when it's legal for firearms to be bought, sold, or destroyed without a paper trail. It's a logistical impossibility.

To answer your question more specifically, a guy I work with was looking at a jig that you use with a plain old drill press to finish the last 20% of the machining. Sounds like the final quality depends on the user a bit? I like to make stuff myself when possible, but I don't personally have enough uppers laying around to justify the price of a jig and drill press when the price of 100% lowers are what they are.

I am not so much worried about them coming after the guns, as the already slow creep of taking away our rights, through granule restrictions. Washington already limited our ability to sell, to others.
I am fascinated with the prospect of putting it together my self, and if I can do that without intervention, all the better. Just some ramblings from an old man.

My $0.02.

Just buy a lower from a private party if a paper trail concerns you.

If you are enamoured with the idea of crafting your own then go for it and build your own. It's all good. Whatever route you take, better do it quick. I don't see the powers that be not sticking their fingers in the pie at some point.
