Well I finally got everything needed to put together some loads for my 8mm mag but more importantly got some time to get to the range. Just a little info the gun is a remington 700 classic all factory, minus sanding out the remington bump at the fore end where the sling stud is. Seems like I found a winner right off the bat. Have not checked speed yet but will do so soon. I would have used a dime in the picture but the wife took my money, said something about finders keepers. I guess whats hers is hers and whats mine is hers.

A big thanks goes out to Fotis and Jimmy D. for the heads up on the rifle.

What a skookum cartridge! That one is surely shooting some fine groups for you.

Bill,

That is awesome! Sub .5 MOA right off the bat is great. Glad you got the rifle and she is a shooter.
What glass did you mount, the Ziess?

I took the same voes as you, "Whats yours is mine and whats mini is mine".
The good news is that our brides don't want our rifles.

Wow...You got lucky finding that one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so good spending others' money!

These are a great gun! I had one in a 700 BDL years back but like an idiot I sold it. It too would hold great groups with Sierra 220 grain bullets at about 2900 or so. Dad loaded our ammo pretty hot so it may have been going a little faster, didnt have a chrony back then. I would like to get another one someday, killed my first two or three elk with that 8mm Rem Mag. Never did try the Nosler 200 grain PT's, they would've been the perfect all around bullet in that gun. You got a good one looks like to me!

So spill man!!!!!!!

Apparently you used the TSX.

Weight?
Powder?
Charge?
Velocity?

You're killing us! :p

+1

Fotis ain't the only one hungerin' for details here... spill it!

VERY cool cartridge/load there! That'll take care of darned near anything on earth, arbitrary African minimums notwithstanding...

I never could figure out why the big 8 never took off! Great cartridge, maybe people figured it was too much of a good thing?? I know the very first year they came out I shot one with 220 gr factory loads and they felt like a bone cruncher! A kick-eeze pad or a Sims would tame it to a usable level. It's hard to find the brass now days, I used to make 340 Wby brass from the 8mm brass--just a pass through the die, trim to length, and turn the neck for uniformity made great brass for cheap!

I remember salivating over one as a 13 year old over Remington's catalog. Further investigation revealed that they were very few bullets around for it back then and nom premiums at all. At those speeds the 8mm bullets designed for the 8mm Mauser would make great varmint slugs.

So with the 338 cal being already well established the poor Big 8 never had a chance.

Nice shooting! I have the exact same rifle and mine is looking good too. I am using 220gr Sierra over RL25.

I am guessing 83 grains or so for 3000 fps?

Sorry guys, here is the load.

200 TSX
Fed 215
81.5 7828
bullets seated to the center of the top groove.

Sorry Fotis no speed yet but coming soon.

Wow, that is a great shooting Remington and what a load. I would think you are ready for elk now! Man, that 8RM is just a cool cartridge. Another one of the awesome, odd classics, that guys like you keep alive. Great shooting, hard to argue with that kind of accuracy from such a heavy hitter. Scotty

The big 8 is on my wish list, for sure. I don't really have a huge need for it down here in Alabama, but it stays on the list, never the less. I've got an 8x57 Remington 700 Classic, and I'd like the 8Mag, too. And then a nice 325WSM in a Browning (maybe an X-Bolt? Hmmm...) and I'd have the set. It would be a lot of fun to compare them, for sure.

So many rifles, so little time!

Nice shooting, and congrats on the fine rifle in a great chambering!

I have always liked the forgotten cartridges, makes for a good conversation piece. I had heard that the 8mm has some recoil but to be honest it's a pussycat to shoot.

Thats great to hear Bill. I think most rifles have more paper recoil than they do in person to be honest. That 8mm RM does sound like a neat one Bill. I've never owned anything 8mm, but again, those danged Germans got it right with that bullet size... Scotty

Scotty I agree. I realize that everyone has a different recoil tolerance and an even greater ability to discribe the felt recoil, thus paper recoil. When my son first started shooting he asked about the recoil, (.308) so I kindly asked him to turn sideways and he did. I then punched him in the shoulder and asked if it hurt (didn't punch him hard) and he said no. I then told him that I just punched you harder than the 308 will ever kick you, he's been shooting flinch free ver since.

I think the 8mm is a neat round. This rifle is another first for me on a different level. Of all the remingtons I have or have owned this is the first one that the mag box is not the seating depth limiting factor, the lands are.
