VV-150 and VV-550 how much to get speed as much as possible? Would Hodgdon powders give something more?

65.0 grains of VN550 will push the 250 AB at 2598 fps in a 22 inch pipe. 61.5 grains of VN150 will generate 2524 fps in the same rifle. 65.5 grains of H414 or 65.0 grains of H100V will give you velocities near that of VN550.

Thank you.
I have 650mm/25,6" barrel.. Mag primer usually gives 10-15m/s (30-45fps) more speed also.. 8)

That is about right for the increase in velocity with the mag primer. QuickLoad projects a velocity of 817 m/s with a charge of 4.212 Grams of VN550 (65.0 grains/2682 fps) in your pipe, and 792 m/s with a charge of 3.985 grams of VN150 (61.5 grains/2600 fps). Consequently, the load built on VN550 would be a thumper, generating just a shade under 4000 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle (5414 Joule). With the 250 grain AB, this old cartridge will really shine.

One of the things I enjoy about this forum is the truly international membership here.

Look at this, a hunter from Finland and a hunter from British Columbia discussing their experience & knowledge of a cartridge I've never even used. Very cool.

Oh, yeah, Guy, but the 9.3 X 62 is just too good a cartridge not to be used. It would be a great cartridge (dare I say "skookum") for elk, moose, black bear, grizzly. As Barsness quotes the father of my hunting buddy, "It kills quick, but doesn't shoot up any meat." This makes that old cartridge potentially transnational!

I would go N540 if you need speed around 2600fps. I have an extremely accurate load with 58,6gr of N140 and it gives about 2520fps

The barrel was greasy when i tested the load so don't mind the two first shots on the left, group was shot from 100 meters

Kuula,

A fine representative group. The 9.3 X 62 is greatly a underrated cartridge. You're getting good velocity out of your rifle; at that velocity, the 250 grain AB will work wonders on moose or bear.

+1
Kuula,

Nice shooting. That load will be a hammer on big game.

That seems like a really cool cartridge and I can't imagine much you couldn't handle with a 250gr bullet at 2500+. I've never had a 9.3, but they are some neat cartridges. Scotty

Me to!!!!!!!!!!

I never even heard of it until I started posting here. I am going to have to research it a little. It kind of sounds like a Whelen on steroids, I think that is what DrMike is building, correct me if I am worng. Would someone give me a case length in .in and diam in .in so I can compare. I have a 721 Reming "long" action that may need a new barrel some day soon! Have a great day all!!

Bill, I am not entirely sure on the case, but I think it is mostly a 30-06 length case with a 9.3 bullet. Just a touch more speed than a Whelen. Scotty

Bill,

I'm building a 9.3 X 64 Brenneke, which has somewhat more juice than the 9.3 X 62 (which is no slouch in its own right). Nosler 6th Edition Reloading Guide has data on both of these excellent cartridges. Here is some reading material that will give you an overview of some of the 9.3 cartridges.

I have only shot one adult moose with AccuBond and i like the result, the moose took only few steps back an dropped the bullet entered in front of left leg and came out behind the right shoulder plate. Quick and clean kill i would say, you can see the exit wound from the picture. These days lots of people use Norma's Oryx factory ammo it weighs 285gr an velocity is 2428 but i will stick to 250AB as long as they are available. Here is examples of Normas loads:

Kuula,

Congraatulations on a very nice moose. You will eat well this winter.

Undoubtedly, the 9.3 X 62 is a seriously underrated cartridge in North America. Loaded with 250 grain ABs, this cartridge in a good rifle will take any game walking this continent. It is always satisfying, Kuula, to take an animal cleanly. That satisfaction is intensified when you take it with ammunition you built yourself. You will have to begin to handload.

Great picture of your moose! Looks like the 9.3 is a sure killer on big stuff. It might be hard to push the Whelen out of its place though! I do like the big bullets are decent speed. Hard to really go wrong with them. The bullets act like they are supposed to and kill way out of proportion! Scotty

Can anyone tell me what the Nosler manual lists as the most accurate powders tested for the 9.3x62 with 250 Accubonds and 286 Partitions?

Brazos_Jack,

Welcome to the forum. The most accurate powders Nosler lists are Varget for the 250 grain AB and N135 for the 135 PT.

Are you loading for the 9.,3 X 62, or merely exploring the cartridge? It is a great cartridge for those hunting big game.
