A Chrono Question

I've had a Chrony F1 for many years ... it's been shot & repaired a few times by 'friends' who really knew how to shoot better than they did when using my kit...ah well, what can you do?

Now it's been shot and finished & I'm about to buy a new one..haven't yet decided on another Chrony, ProChrono or Caldwell...nothing too lavish.

But here's the question. I usually set the chrono up on a tripod as near to eight feet from the muzzle as I can measure...but is that the right distance?

Do other users set the chrono further away, or closer, or do I have it about right?
Cheers, ET

I'm usually around 12 feet . if I set up much closer I blow the sky screens off , when shooting my rifles that don't have muzzle brakes .

After getting some crazy reading on my Chrony I called the company and was told to increase my muzzle to unit distance. Now I set up 15 ft from the muzzle with good results.

Routinely, I set my Chrony at 12 feet. Occasionally, especially if I intend on doing ballistic calculations, I will set it at 10 feet. Same for the Oehler. Now that I've begun using the LabRadar, it is set even with the muzzle. Nice!

Believe the instructions for my CED mentioned 12 - 15 feet. That works well.

Once I fired a .300 mag load over a friend's Chrony, at about 8 feet... The muzzle blast blew the whole thing, tripod and all, over!

Thanks folks, I appreciate your replies. I haven't had any issues with blast pushing the tripod over & such, nor disfunctional readings, but wondered what distance others use.
I need to buy a new chrono now .... Chrony is dead, long live Chrony....as long as it doesn't get shot again! (y)

Be brave. Set it up right in front of your target.

Never thought of doing that, it's a great idea....but, it'll only be me shooting it under that condition.
No ooooooh can I have a go? Chancer's

I was only half joking...After you have a good muzzle velocity # setting it up downrange makes a lot of sense. I have a CED w/ a large digital readout and can see the #s with the scope from the bench. You are actually probably less likely to hit it downrange than up close assuming you know where your load is hitting.

I setup my ProChrono when I was using it at 10-12 ft. It worked well as long as the light was right. I had a Chrony before and it was flaky at any distance.
These days I use a MagnetoSpeed V1 and it eliminates all those concerns. The MagnetoSpeed Sporter is around $179 discounted. Although that's probably a bit more than the OP had in mind.

It's a much more expensive item in UK Partisan, your 179$ becomes around £150GBP
But the price of the unit in UK is $280 / £195GBP
