A dark path

I took another step toward my rifle transformation dreams. I bought some Nosler brass for the first time, and it's 280AI! I'm still on a slow timeline, I think after this fall's hunting season, I'm going to send my rifle down to Pac-Nor for a new barrel. It's currently a 270 win, and has served me well.

$150 for 100 pieces of Nosler brass was a hard pill to swallow, but I know it's good stuff. Plus I don't want to fire form.

And my component stockpile is nearly complete, I think I have enough sample powders. Still need to find some 160 grn Nos AB. I know it's a bit early to already be working on gathering components, I just don't want things to dry up again when its time for by re-barrel.

Anyway… just having fun with it.

Ah, yes, 'tis a darksome path upon which you have ventured. It is a fell thing to purchase brass for a cartridge yet unchambered. You are a brave man; a brave man, indeed. Of course, we'll all be watching with intense interest, urging you onward as the goodies are accumulated and you move inexorably toward the goal of a fine rifle chambered in 280AI. We're all wishing you every success in the build.

Congratulations on picking a fine calibre. The 280AI will serve you well, I purchased Nosler 280AI brass supposedly at a discounted price & it was 100.00 for a 50 count . It is the easiest brass I have ever loaded.
Looking forward for to the witnessing of your build  sure hope there will be photos with a range report in the future.

Blessings,
Dan

Don't say those words. This is evil you saying these things Mike!!!! Buying brass and bullets and dies and triggers for projects is a good thing. It ensures rifles will follow!!! I've had 9.3X62 and 8X57 brass for over a year it hasn't hurt anything you just have to keep it out of sight.

Awesome your selection of components is perfect in my Pac-Nor tubed 280AI 7828SSC and 160's go under half all day any day and if I do my part it will shoot under a .1"

Dangerous waters you are treading in and these guys will most assuredly "help a guy out" all they can! :p

Jake you will have to PM me your load. Jim and several others have some dandy loads too. Should help get mine dialed in once I start loading!

The tolls on this path are great. My nemesis, otherwise known as my wife, is demanding restitution. She demands a Nikon FX lens for her camera, which happens to cost more then a re-barrel, prior to my purchase. But these are her terms, and they must be fulfilled.

I also need to save for a Redding comp. seating die. And like I said, bullets. I like the 160 grn AB. I'm a bit skeptical on the 150 grn ABLR, they seem a bit finicky. I'll give them a try at some point. Probably also try 150 grn Barns TTSX.

…just going to take me some time. "good things come to those who wait."

Ah, yes, I remember my first step down this dark path to becoming a certified gun crank. That first rifle (such a lovely Model 70 stainless and walnut chambered in 7RM) is still with me. It cost me well over ten thousand dollars, after carpeting the upstairs of the house--and that has been many years ago. The next rifle, another lovely piece of art, cost me almost as much after we secured the new dining room suite and other assorted furnishings. These rifles have nearly ruined me financially as the cost of furniture and house renovations and new autos for my lady have reached astronomical levels. I tell you, my good man, 'tis a far darker path than you can ever imagine. However, there is quite a crowd of well-intentioned souls lurking about on this forum who are prepared to stiffen your resolve and assist in whatever way they can to spend your money. Which lenses will you wife be securing next?

wait till she wants this..Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens ....I have the canon version..its a very expensive hobby.. Lee

Remember that having a custom barrel made, and installed, can take weeks, even a couple of months.

I speed up the process by ordering my barrel early. When it is complete and delivered to my local gunsmith, I take the rifle over and sometime between one day, and one week later, I'm shooting with the new barrel. Heck, I've even done the job with the 'smith, and been shooting later that day!

Holy crap Guy don't be putting ideas like that in a person's head! Next think you know there will be a barrel for this out there in limbo land waiting to show up on my doorstep, and then a barrel for that! You dang enablers! :p

Way to go! I've been just as guilty.

I think a 280 Ackley really makes a ton of sense. Good luck with your build.

David,

What's your address?
Say 24" 1-12" SS .358?

Congratulations on your upcoming build. The 280 AI is an excellent round and your
selection of components is spot on. Guy makes an excellent point by ordering the barrel now.
You might be able to get everything lined up and even be able to hunt with it this fall.
Why wait. ;)

You guys are terrible enablers. Now I'm thinking I should rechamber my custom .280 to the AI version. At least it would be just a rechamber and a set of dies should I go that route. I think I'll pass.
You don't have to tell me about camera lenses though I have several A series Canons and about 7 or 8 lenses running from 25MM to 800 MM. Now everything is digital and at my age I don't plan on changing. Sure will be in a polluted puddle if they ever totally drop film. :(

Thanks guys

the rifle itself isn't' too far off. It already has a B&C stock, Timney trigger, and I've upgraded my scope from the above picture from a VX2 to a VX3 3.5x10 40mm CDS. A custom barrel is the last piece of the puzzle for that rifle, I think that will be a decent platform for a hunting rifle.

This fall, when your buck falls to the trusty old rifle...

You'll think to yourself "I coulda had a .280 AI"
