The rut hasn't yet kicked in, so I'm hunting but not real seriously. I am hiking seriously, and have driven my little Jeep on some "roads" that were probably actual, real logging roads at some long vanished point in history...

The famous stump. I've been hiking into this same stump since I shot a nice 26" wide 4x4 from it, in 2008:

A doe and I surprised each other in the mist today. Cell phone photo:

What's left of a logging road between rock slides, washouts and brush growing over it. Nice hiking trail now.

Heck of a drop-off a few feet in front of the Jeep. Maybe 1500' or so?

Mighty Glacier Peak, a dormant volcano. Seldom climbed as it's a couple of days backpacking trip just to get to the lower slopes of this impressive peak. Has year-round, permanent glaciers on it, despite "climate change."

Clouds moving in this morning. Yeah, it's kind of steep here in places...

Pretty good mule deer country. So where's my 26" wide buck?

The hunt goes on. Guy

Great photos as usual Guy, looks like some great country to hunt in. Hope you enjoy yourself to the full out there.

Hey Guy. In the last pic I see a long ridge running away from where you took the picture. Ya need a friend or someone to hike out to the end of the ridge and drop down in to the deep gully. Stay in the bottom and hike right back at ya. That big buck is in there. You need a helper to spook em to you.

Beautiful country, to be sure. I've walked many of those old logging roads that are no longer passable with my pickup. Found a surprising number of animals using them as mountain "super highways."

Thanks all. This area is actually real close to home, and I've been playing up there for 20 years or more. Hiking, mountain biking, and hunting.

One thing I've noticed, is that there's a whole lot of vertical out there! It goes from about 750 feet above sea level to about 6,000' above sea level in a few miles. Ooh-Rah!

The .25-06 felt real good in hand up there again. I just might haul out the .30-30 when the weather hits tomorrow...

Regards, Guy

You are pretty far west Guy to be that close to 10,000 foot high Glacier peak. I used to see it clearly from Darrington on the west side when I lived there.

Awesome pictures, that's some beautiful country. Nice jeep too! :), good luck.

I'm giving it a few days rest to get into the rut, and HOPEFULLY get some snow on the ground.

I'm sure the rut will come while my tag is still good, but am less certain about the snow. We seem to be having quite a bit of warmish, wet weather. Phooey.

Still, am excited about the tag. Saw NO other hunters while I was up there yesterday! None! Cool.

Thank you Guy :). I can't participate this fall but sure hope to put on some miles next fall with DrMike & gerry . I believe we may see a Moose or two.

Blessings,
Dan

This evening, shortly before sunset I was visited by a little buck. Dang he was cute! Stuck around near me for about a half an hour, absolutely no fear of me. I guess I was that funny looking stump, just sitting there... Sadly, his grandpa with the 5x5, 27" antlers didn't show...

Back again tomorrow, have another place I want to check... Just a hunch, but a lot of does live there, year 'round. I'll bet the bucks know that too...
