The two guns I took was the 30-06 and the 375 H/H. If you can only take one I would take the 375 and rent a 270, 308, 30-06 from the P.H. for the wife and son. Or take the 300 with two different loads and rent a 375 from the P/H, at least for the eland hunt. when i first started planning the trip I did not have a big bore and a friend from another forum got me into the 375 and Aleena helped me with the rental idea, which worked out perfectly, as I also took family.

Well, I guess the Namibian gov't solved the issue.
At least according to NAPHA, the minimum caliber allowed for import for plains game hunting is 7mm.....

Yeah- I've well and truly flattened a pile of critters with mine.
I've got some reduced loads for the wife and boy based on the 150 Ballistic Tip@ 2700 that should be sufficient.

Nothing wrong with the 300WSM. As you stated, you can build (or purchase) reduced loads that will work reasonably well.
A little late but I would agree with a number of the other guys that a 270 will do the job :wink: I have shot numerous Elk with a 270 win and I only load 130gr partitions or ABs. I am sure that 150gr partitions will work on the bigger plains animals as well. Good shot placement and then get the cameras out.

Hodgeman, I am not trying to be argumentative, but I do not think the 270 is the best gun for this trip. Especially if your only taking one gun. You are flying half way around the world with the family to possibly make a once in a lifetime hunt. Plus even if you wound an animal and never recover it, you still have to pay for it. If you have a 375, you should consider taking it and the 300. the 375 for the Eland for sure and it could be used very well for the Zebra and Wildebeest. The 300 will easily take everything else and you can take two different loads for it, one for you and one for the family. as mentioned earlier I took a 30-06 and 375 and was glad I did

As much as I like the .270- the Namibians have put the 7mm as the low cutoff (the rationale for that could be an endless debate), so it's out and the .300 is in. I'm leaning very strongly toward taking the .375 as well. Pretty sure if I have it, I'll use it on both wildebeest and zebra due to their reputation for toughness as well as the eland for sheer size... not really sure of the mechanics of packing around two rifles though since we're mainly on foot without any gunbearers.
I don't think I'd buy one special for the trip, but I've already got one and I shoot it pretty well. Come to think of it- if it were just me shooting I might well take the .375 for everything.
Thanks ak100- I'd read that about SA as well- we're looking at routing through Frankfurt which would avoid SA altogther- and cut the travel time substantially.

If it was just me going to Africa, I would use a .375 H&H on everything. That way one does not have to worry about local rule and regs. Problem is, I guess, that if you are taking family and are they able to shoot .375 or not?
