A-Tip on game?

My relatively short big game guiding career soured me on Atips, Sst Berger's and eldm on game. Granted the results were generated by relatively inexperienced hunters, that is a critical factor but things can go a little sideways for the very experienced. I don't know anyone who's shot more elk or knows more about how to shoot them than the man from Idaho, he just mentioned getting one lung . My bull last year would have been a rodeo had I not had an AccuBond.
Sometimes critters wiggle when you're focused on sight picture, sight alignment, breathing and trigger control and your perfect shot, not so much all of a sudden.
I select bullets not for perfect shot placement but for a minor error that causes, in the case of elk, that bullet to strike the strongest bone in any deer species.

I shot my last moose in AK with a 300wm and 215 Bergers. I shot it at 250yds through the front shoulder and it exploded both lungs. It went about 30yds and piled up. "Match" bullets aren't for everyone, and I've even made a few bad shots with them (most of them were animals that moved), but if you put the bullets where they are supposed to go they crush animals. I've had way more elk collapse from being hit with "match" bullets than conventional bullets. A .300 magnum and 215 Bergers or Amax/ELD-M's behaves a lot like a .375 magnum with conventional bullets. Heavy for caliber or slower speeds is where the "Match" bullets shine. Bergers don't tend to cause as much trauma as the Amax's/ELD-M's so they tend to travel further from a Berger hit but most fall within eyesight.

I kill a lot of elk and I'm around a lot of others that get killed. My hunting buddy and I each have 3 tags again this year and my kids have 2 each. I'd be willing to bet we fill at least 6 of those and possibly as many as 8 or 9. If there was a better elk killer I would use it. The .375's and .416's might kill at bit better but give up a huge amount of range with lower BC bullets (or higher BC heavy weight bullets at way lower velocities) and a ton more recoil. Most people don't realize how much higher the retained velocity/energy is with "Match" bullets compared to conventional bullets. That makes a difference in "killing power" as well.

BTW the Ballistic Tips are great bullets but give up a good deal of BC to "Match" bullets. Years ago I shot a deer at 813yds with a 180gr Ballistic Tip from a 300RUM at 3350fps. If you run the numbers that bullet was pretty slow at that distance despite the high starting velocity.

I do love ballistic tips on deer. The antelope I shot on Tuesday at 350 yards was absolutely DRT. Not a twitch from a 100 gr. BT started at 3077. Heart and lungs absolutely destroyed, every thing from esophagus to heart was damaged. Didnt even hit a rib on the way in. Exit wound looked like a shrapnel wound. I do like DRT. I do think I’m going to try and get that #1 to shoot a heavier ballistic tip based on what I saw, particularly if I use the rifle for mule deer, roughly twice the size.

Thats why I only shot one critter with the scenar. It worked exceptionally well, but it occurred to me that I don't want a bullet that performs fantastically when conditions are right, I want a bullet with predictable performance regardless of the situation. But the match type and Bergers do kill with authority when people have the fortitude to wait for the shot.

Don,
The 115 BT is the bullet for the 257 Roberts. Deer are DRT with a shot through the slats.

The 215 and 230 Hybrids do have a large following and they work. I can vouch for the 230 it was the prefect bullet in my 30-378 factory barrel. Now I shoot the 245gr EOL in my 8 twist which is a “hunting” bullet.

I haven’t tried the 115s since I completed my modifications to the 257, I need to do that. I found I do have about 25 110s in my cabinet as well. Prior to the mods I wasn’t impressed with the consistency but I‘m betting I can get them to shoot now.
