I brought home my new M70 Extreme Weather (300WSM) today.

This rifle just oozes with quality! I hope it shoots as good as it feels and looks!

Question:

To those who have gotten an FN-made M70, how'd you get that gunk off the trigger adjustment screws? I got the majority of it off no problem using a utility knife and gently cutting/scraping it off, but it is still filling in the heads of the screws. How'd you get that gunk out?

Thanks!

With mine I just dug at it with whatever I had, I think it was the point of a blox cutter blade. That stuff is on there, when you are done it's a good idea to put fingernail polish on them to keep them from moving.

I've been having some success by heating a very fine flat screw driver in a candle flame and melting it. My kids have so much el-cheapo fingernail polish, shouldn't be a tough thing to swipe some for this purpose when I've got it set how I like.

It's really pretty decent without fiddling with it, but I can't just NOT do any adjusting... ;)

I have had good luck using a spray can of Barricade with a rag to cut the gunk on trigger parts and other parts of rifles.

So, you finally got your new rifle. Do you have mounts and a scope for it yet?

Hi Charlie! Happy Memorial Day!

Yeah, I got it. I put on some Leupold standard bases 6mmRemington sold me for a price I couldn't refuse, and I have a Leupold Vari-X II I wasn't using, so I put that on. I just lightly bolted it all together to see how the rifle balances. I don't have anything to check ring alignment or to lap the rings, so I'm not sure I want to shoot it until I can do that, but I sure handles nice!

Congrats on picking that new rifle up Tom. I am sure it is killing you sitting there, unfired! Scotty

I was hoping to get the rings set up properly first, but it may just win out....I'm sure the range will be ridiculous today, though....

Good luck Tom, whatever you decide, I imagine your will power is getting less and less by the minute! Scotty

I'm in the same boat almost. Just waiting for my son to get a scope for that Extreme Weather SS of his! I can't wait to see how it does.

I have a box of Federal 180 gr. Accubonds I purchased to break it in with, get her close to being sighted in, and to chronograph each one just for a reference. I have some brass I bought and some 180 gr. Accubonds I'm going to load up a few so after the break-in I can shoot a few loads, meant to say my son can shoot a few loads!

I went to the range yesterday. There were a few people there but not too bad. I wanted to check out zero with the new TPS rings on my .340 Bee and .270 Model 70.

Tom, you need a scope for that rifle. Have you decided between the Leupold and the Conquest yet?

Easiest way I've ever found to set up rings is a 1" oak dowel from Lowe's - about 36" long. Makes a great "turn in" tool, and it works for lining things up, and with some 1000 & 1500 grit paper it makes a good lapping tool. Find a straight one and you're all set. For about $5, too.

That is what I have been doing for quite awhile myself. Scotty

Charlie,

I think I'm going to go with the Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 with the B&C reticle. Looking at these bases, though, they put the scope at just the right height, yet there's generous clearance at the bell. I wonder if a 50mm would fit? Probably would be a bit cumbersome on such a light and finely balanced rifle, though. Guess the 40mm is best.

duyam/Scotty- that's a genious idea for ring set up! Dang, I wish I'd thought of that. I bet I could even get a 1" steel rod from my father-in-law, as he works in a steel mill. Sweet! Thanks, guys!

Shot the rifle today. Only got 8 rounds down range with it, and it was HOT out, but results are promising. Shots 4, 5, and 6 went in a group of about 1.6-1.7 inchest at 100. This is with factory Winchester ammo (180gr PSP bullets). Shots 7 and 8 were following a scope adjustment and were also about 1.5 inches apart.

For this early in the break-in process and for the first load I try, that's pretty promising! I think my dad's FN-made 7-08 took about 50 or so rounds to really tighten up.

I am probably going to go get some 180gr Accubonds to load up for further shooting when I finish the box of Winchester stuff.

The recoil is no different than an '06 with stout loads, really. That was a nice surprise. I expected more thump. Winchester says these rounds do 2950 with a 180gr bonded PHP bullet.

Oh, and Scotty....you're gonna LOOOOOOOOOVE shooting your rifle in that B&C stock. Mine has the same stock on it OEM, and it is SWEET.

Tom, I am thinking you are well on your way to a great shooter, although, to be honest, I wasn't really expecting any less. The rifles are put together pretty well, in good stocks with good finish work. The only thing that could make it shoot bad would be a crap barrel. I think you are going to be impressed when you really start putting some AB's or PT's through it. Ready to head out West yet? Scotty

Charlie, how do you like those rings? How did the range session go? Scotty

They seem to hold real solidly plus they are half the cost of the Leupold Tactical bases. Both rifles sighted in without incident. The .270 Model 70 settled right in with the 3.5-10x50 Kahles to 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards. This was with 130 Nosler CT Winchester Supreme factory ammo.

The .340 took a few rounds to sight in the 3-12x50 Swarovski. By the time I had put 10-210gr TSX and 10-225gr Partition handloads through it and got it sighted in, it settled down to about one inch, 3-shot groups. It was fairly windy yesterday and my groups showed it.
