I have been wanting a close cover, fast handling .308 for my Upper Peninsula Cedar swamp/thicket terrain...

I am leaning toward a new 7600 as I cannot find a good used one...anyone have any experience or info on how well the new models shoot? I wonder how the trigger would be? and if the trigger pull can be improved easily like the 700s? I may even consider a new 750 auto but have the same reservations...including a pretty stiff price tag!

any help out there?

Some of the 760, 7600 were shooters. I had a 742 carbine 30-06 that shot MOA with handloads.
Triggers are not very good but I think there is an aftermarket one available.

They can be shooters, but I remain unconvinced on the triggers. ;)

I agree. Nothing like a good trigger on a bolt action rifle.

My 7600 35 whelens both shot well under 3/4" MOA at 100 yards. However lately I have had no luck accuracy-wise with any factory sporter barreled Remington.

Hmmmmmmm.....

Now you got me thinking bolt action again JD.... Maybe a Browning A Bolt? I want a wood stock...Rem does not make the BDL or CDL in .308 anymore...Not sure how well the Rem 798 would be?

A Ruger MK II may be a possibility...again needing a trigger...

HELP!!!!

Northwoods.......................After reading your post, I just couldn`t stop myself here!!!!...........I have a Ruger M77 Frontier MK2 in a 300 WSM with a 16.5" barrel! I have two scopes that I use for it. A conventional mount and a scout style scope......You want a rifle that is very quick to shoulder? Very fast for target acquisition? Is light, easy to pack and carry? Accurate? Versatile for short, medium and the longer ranges too?..............The Ruger Frontier comes in the stainless 308!!......You put a scout style scope on that thing and I can assure you, that there is no bolt action rifle that will surpass these little Rugers for manuverability, handling and for quick target acquisition!!!............And! As my chrono results prove, you will only be losing about 4 to 5% in velocity vs. the 24" tube!!!....I did replace my trigger though! But Ruger says that they have made improvements on their triggers! On the Frontier line, I don`t know for sure!...........Even if you need to replace the trigger? Well worth it!!!...........They are a wonderful handy dandy yet powerful rifles! Simply outstanding for a bolt action!!!

The two reasons I sold that 742 Carbine were -
1. Every time I carried it, my hand was on the cold metal receiver

2. I'm a M700 kind of guy

If I may ask, why 308 Win when you have a few other calibers that offer similar ballistics? Nothing against the great 308, just curious.

What about one of the short mag WSM's? It would give you a step up in power but you can always load it down for target shooting etc.
Big Squeeze has had some good experience with his 300 WSM.

Northwoods & JD!!.............It may be difficult to get a 300 WSM in the Frontier. Ruger discontinued the WSM`s in the Frontier last year! Something regarding legal patent issues!..........Last March, I was lucky enough to get one. If your interested in a 300 WSM Frontier, there may be some still available on the auction sites!..........If not a 300 WSM or 308, the Frontier is available in the 338 Federal and the 358 Win. Personally, I really like that 338 Federal cartridge!.......But out here in the West, I prefer a 30 cal. magnum which allows me greater range capability if needed!.....For your use Northwoods, the 338 Federal in the Frontier would be ideal! Quite a stopper too!!......Have you guys watched the Outdoor Channel with that actor Tim or Tom Abell or Ebell? He has used the 338 Fed. cartridge in Africa extensively with great success on small and big game!!

1) The .308 is fine with 180gr bullets... back up for my Bear guiding archery clients when tracking...

2) I need lots (4.0)" of eye relief....thats why I chose .308 over 30.06... short action baby! :p

3) all I have left is my .280 LSS, Tikka .243, and the Cenntennial Mod 94 in .356 Winny.... Long's buddy made me an offer on the 7mm08 that I couldn't resist!

I have the .280 set up for Western Big Game with a 4.5X14X40 Leupie (30mm tube) 8)
The .243 sports a 6.5X20 Mil Dot for Yotes

I need another UP deer rifle JD!
The .356 is practically NIB with DLX wood and is staying in the gun safe...[/b][/i]

With a scout scope, you certainly won`t need to worry about eye relief!!!.........Combo deer rifle and back up rifle? A 308 w/180 gr. will do very nicely whether in the Frontier or another compact!

Yep!! That 350 Remmy Mag. is a sure stopper!! It is not as compact or as handy as the Frontier though and no option for a fast targeting scout scope..........If Ruger would chamber the 350 Remmy mag in the Frontier with the scout scope option????? WOW!!!!! That would make a great back up against the BIG bears!!

I really like my Remington 750 Woodmaster carbine in 30-06. Here are some pictures of my last target with it at 100 yards Remington Factory 150gr bullets.

That`s a real nice boomin sweety you have there Pop!!! Did you buy that new or used???..........BTW!!! I got in my 20" barreled .375 Ruger Alaskan in this month! Black Hogue stock and the black matte barrel. Talk about a nice handling 375!!! Chrono`d some Hornady factory loads last weekend. The 270 gr. Hornady Spire Points for 40 rounds averaged 2706 fps. I`ll tweak that up a bit!!!...................Let`s wait and see what Northwoods decides on! Now! He`s even more confused!!!
