am I crazy!!! a 7600?

Nice rifle POP and I really like the 444, and 2100fps with a 335gr is something. How does it shoot and is that castprefomance bullet or what?

It is a 355 gr Beartoothcast with Reloder 7.
I have not shot this rifle yet but that is what the load did from my other 444's I had. 2100 and less than MOA.

That`s a real nice boomin sweety you have there Pop!!! Did you buy that new or used???..........BTW!!! I got in my 20" barreled .375 Ruger Alaskan in this month! Black Hogue stock and the black matte barrel. Talk about a nice handling 375!!! Chrono`d some Hornady factory loads last weekend. The 270 gr. Hornady Spire Points for 40 rounds averaged 2706 fps. I`ll tweak that up a bit!!!...................Let`s wait and see what Northwoods decides on! Now! He`s even more confused!!!

Big Squeeze, I like the Ruger Alasken but thinking of looking at the Ruger Compact Magnums. What is your impressions of their new rounds and their short rifles? Do you like WSM's?

Well, that is a truckin 355gr and that makes the 444 something really serious. When you shoot it let us know how it groups if you don't mind.

Will do btw 355 not 335......

Yep, sometimes I invert numbers when I am not giving them attention, it got me in trouble in school also.

Bullet!!!........................If you have read any of my previous posts, I am very much a short barreled compact blaster fan!! Along with my 300 WSM 16.5" barreled Ruger Frontier, I now have the 20" barreled 375 Ruger Alaskan.........Ruger, IMO, is really changing the market dynamics when it comes to the more compact rifles, ie. the Frontier, the new Alaskan 375 and now with their RCM lines!!..............If one can achieve basically the same performance and accuracy, but from a shorter more compact package, then why not own a compact!........The new RCM`s are very good looking. Basically, a shorter version of the African!........The RCM`s from what I`ve read, will equal the ballistics of the longer barreled WSM`s. However, I`m not going to rush out and get the 300 RCM and trade my 300 WSM!........I love the short mag/shorter barreled concept! I would gladly trade a 4 or 5% velocity loss vs. the 24" tubes for a lighter, more compact, a more manuverable, a quicker to shoulder, a quicker to target acquisition rifle!!! However the .375 Ruger does equal the ballistics of a 24" 375 H&H!! Ya gotta love that, which I do!!..................Either a nice compact in the WSM or the RCM`s would be a great choice. It all depends on what you wish to do with it!!....Ruger did discontinue the 300 WSM in the Frontier! If you are looking for a short barreled compact in the 300 WSM, and if you can find one in the Frontier?? BUY IT!!!.....On the other hand if you wish a 375? The Ruger Alaskan is a great cartridge that is rapidly gaining in popularity and will never be going anywhere near the obsolete cartridge trash heap piles!!!...............

Northwoods was pondering a lot of this info today before going to work. I was not much help as I had a case of the snoozes  . Was over shooting my new bow that I got from Northwoods and the snow and cold (plus a brat and an italian sausage) kinda knocked me out. ****Oh, by the way, here is a commercial. Want to see a fantastic new bow! Take a look at Monster Bows. I absolutely love mine!

Unless he is going to use his 243 for a bench shooter, when we go to the range, he needs something a bit more in that line. His 280, in my opinion, is too big for this purpose. The 308 is a great deer round as well as a great bench caliber. But then you have this whole bear thing . . . actually I think a better bear killer is a short barrel 12 ga pump or a revolver in 44 - 45 cal.

Or like one of Northwoods old buddies, Big Andy, used a 2 headed axe. Can you picture a guy about 5'9" weighing about 300 with long coal black hair and beard (that was Big Andy). Tracking bear with a nervous bow hunter and using that 2 headed axe?

I really like my Remington 750 Woodmaster carbine in 30-06. Here are some pictures of my last target with it at 100 yards Remington Factory 150gr bullets.

Very, very nice! How is the trigger pull for you? Obviously you are handling it damn well! :p

NWH,

You should consider a Guide Gun in 45-70 for chasing bears in the cedar swamps. With proper loads, it will stop almost any critter.

It has a slight creep at first but I really don't pay attention to it I just look at my target and focus on where I want to hit and take my time with the triger. It really is only a slight creep with mine and when the creep stops just a little more pressure and it brakes clean.

Can the 45-70 be loaded down for whitetails JD? Say....180gr???

300 casts is the lightest 458 caliber bullets I have seen locally. With 15 grains of Unique they do abou 1300 fps and is a great plinking load.

Still primarily looking for a thick cover whitetail rifle...I do have a shotgun that I can grab for tracking dangerous wounded critters with....00 Buckshot is a great close range equalizer...

Northwoods................If you wish to stay with the 30 cal., and want something for thicker cover, then go with the Ruger Frontier in the 308, or even the 338 Federal in the same rifle would be excellent! Slap a scout scope on either one and you`ll have an ideal rifle for that purpose!....I use my Frontier in all terrains, thick stuff, open plains, mountains, hills, you name it....For handling and quick to target, you can`t beat em!

How is the muzzle jump on those? I had a Rem Mod 7 in .308 with a 20" bbl and the muzzle would "lift" 6-8" up off the shooting bag with each shot...

I would imaging a 16.5" bbl would be like shooting one of my Encores?

Northwoods.............My 300 WSM Frontier shorty DOES have some recoil. But the recoil with a 308 in that same rifle, would be less and much more manageable.....At the range, assuming I`m not holding the rifle down, most of the barrel movement during recoil is backwards with little vertical height motion. Since I`m a right handed shooter, all I do is put my left hand on the barrel top or grip the stock from underneath. Also if you use a scout scope set up, more weight will be over the barrel reducing any lift as well....You shouldn`need to do what I do with a 308. You should have no recoil problems with a .308 Frontier! On the other hand, my 300 WSM is a different ball game!!!.....As with everything else, rifles not excluded, when you gain something somewhere, there is always a compromise, a tradeoff, or a loss of something else! Naturally, the shorter, lighter, more compact rifles will kick more than a full sized heavier rifle of the same caliber!........But! I will glady take a little more recoil at the range or in the field in order to have a shorter, more compact, easier to carry, easier to pack, handier, quicker acquistion and certainly a more manuverable rifle! To me, a far better trade off or compromise!!!
