Oh my goodness. Why didn't any of you guys stop me from going to the Sportsman's Warehouse today?

Not only were there two gorgeous Model 70's in .30-06, but there was a very nice 7mm Rem mag 700 CDL... Priced right. With the 26" barrel it balances out just a little more muzzle heavy than my 24" .30-06 and .25-06 700 CDL's. Looks just as good.

The 7mm Rem mag was my favorite cartridge about 10 years ago. I used it to hunt mule deer & elk, and got my big bull elk with it. For one reason or another I sold off my pair of 7mm mag rifles (Sendero that was amazingly accurate, and an honest, hard-working 700 ADL). Being very much enamored of the cartridge though, I simply set aside my dies, brass, bullets and even loaded ammo.

I could have a new 7mm mag CDL up and running almost instantly. But.... Will it really do anything my .30-06 CDL won't?

Grrrr.... Seems I've got a bad case of new rifle lust... Not sure why, I have more than enough rifles to serve any purpose.

Guy

I used to own about a dozen Model 70's back in the 1980's. I have never recovered from selling my .257 Roberts (1953) Super Grade and the .250/3000 first year (1936) Model 70 which I owned and hunted with during this period.

I am the wrong guy to ask about Win Model 70 lust!

You need a Model 70, Guy. :)

Another one? I do have 70's in .300 WSM and .375 H&H.

This Remington sure looked good, but I'm not sure the 7mm mag would really do anything for me in the field that I wouldn't do with a .30-06 instead...

Sigh... Too many beautiful rifles out there and not enough lifetime to use them all.

Yes, another one.
One can never have too many. [emoji4]

Yeah, it's hard to beat the looks of those CDLs. Great rifles. A 7 Rem Mag is a really hard cartridge to not like a whole lot.

Yeah other than the tumour they attach to the buttstock they are a pretty classy rifle. I think you should look at a Supergrade in a M70 though if your looking or I know there's a bunch of nice ones of GB and you can pick your poison.

A wise and learned man.

I think you should run down to that gunshop and get that M700CDL while it's available. Work out whyfores and whynots concerning the 7mag. later. Personally, for reasons I won't try to define, I had several '06's before I bought a 7mag. and I like the big 7 much better.
Don't get me wrong I still like .30 calibers but now I opt for the .308 Win. then the 7mag, then the .300 Win.

Amen, a tumor for the butt-pad is exactly what that thing is! It is hideous and ruins the nice lines and looks of the CDL stock. What are they thinking?

That 7mm will not do ANYTHING that the 30-06 can do just just as well. Face it guy with the 30-06 you don't need all that other stuff, but you do need that Supergrade 30-06! What a beautiful well thought out rifle. How can you resist! Now just pull the trigger and get the darn thing.

Once you have that and you still think it prudent go ahead and pick up that 7mm Mag if no-one else has snagged it already. You have my blessing. :p

Go get it! 168 LRAB with that BC at 3000 fps? Sorry no '06 can do that.

And there you have the unbiased opinion of some of the finest enablers in the world!

I concur. Maybe change it up a bit and get the 7mm Rem Mag in a M70 Super Grade.

Guy, the 7mm mag in the CDL is just sweet. Always remember when it comes to hunting or shooting the word NEED should never be used !
My nephew has that rifle and with the 160gr. Accubonds over top of IMR4350 it is just a deadly at 3,000fps.
I am going to be playing with the 168gr. ABLRs in his rifle this fall:)!!
Fotis could you please PM me the load you are using with those ABLRs?

Blessings,
Dan

Their are rifles that have a "kill like lightning" myth to them. The 25-06 being one and the Seven Mag the other. The numbers and physics don't necessarily bear that out but they just seem too. The seven Mag is one of those... CL

CL, it's funny. Back when I was using the 7mm Rem mag heavily, I had a fellow on another forum who kept taking me to task for using a .28 cal rifle when "real" riflemen used .30 cals...

Didn't bug me too much, 'cause I never saw a photo of anything he'd actually killed, whereas the 7mm mag had done just fine for me.

Oddly, I eventually went back to the .30 myself, mostly out of convenience, but never quite gave up that deep respect for the 7mm...

Regards, Guy
