Opens August 1st...

Haven't got my eyes on one yet, but working on it...

Hope you are able to score on one Guy! I know you have some beasts in your area. I will have a bear tag in the pocket come Oct, so maybe I'll luck out with a little bear meat this year too!

Good luck Guy.
Are you hunting with you 375 H&H again this year?

Good luck, Guy. Bear opens here on August 15, but I likely won't get serious until September when I'm hunting elk. Trust you tag out on a great bruin. You have some beautiful colour phase bears down your way.

It opens up here in Oregon on the same day. I'm pretty dang excited about taking the 338 WM for a walk in the bear woods.

Good luck Guy.

Good luck to you all, I'm surprised the season is so early our's opens again September 1st, how are the hides that time of year?

Best of luck Guy.

In the area above Fairbanks we have a general season and can hunt the brownies every year, basically year around, Some areas, in that area, we are allowed two per year. These bears are smaller than the coastal brown bears.
Our son has gotten one already this year and used his new 45/70 that he got last christmas to accomplish the task. He will be working in the area all summer, until school starts. His great uncle is a Swift guy and does the reloading so that is what he used.

However, the negatives of living here are the high cost of living, the dark and cold during the winter, and for some the wilderness is too extreme. Crime, especially theft is also high. We have a sign that says "nothing in this house is worth losing your life for"

Man, now that is the way to put that 45-70 to work!

Anyone have any special way they prepare the meat for good home cooking?

Thanks
Steve

Going back to our son working this summer in the mountains he sent a note to his mother telling her he was making Bear stew and it was pretty good.

He says for four campers he makes it like so and then just adds to it for more people. The recipe was given to him, and/or taught to him, by his employer

Salt, Pepper and Garlic powder after it is done and just before it is served.

Tomato soup I can
approx two cups of carrots
1/4 pound of cut mushrooms
two cut up onions and two cut up potatoes
at least two pounds os stew meat ( bear )
1/2 pound of pre cooked bacon
one cup of red wine.

He says when they are camped for a day or more he will start this early afternoon for the evening meal, we are assuming 4 to 5 hours of stewing. He "says" everybody loved it, but we personally have not tried it, we will have him fix us some when he gets home in the fall.

Thanks Scotty, my wife and I like to joke, he is off hunting with the rifle we gave him, with the ammo his great uncle gave him, while we are spending our days working LOL But seriously we are proud of him, mainly because he has a job LOL

338 win mag. Sorry, it was just pointed out to me that you were not looking for recipes but just for the preparation of the meat. my error

That does sound like a good stew Sean.. I would love to give that one a try. We love stew in my house. Seems like it would be good with about any meat too.

I am glad your boy is ripping it up and making great use of his 45-70. I would think it feels good to have that rifle near by stoked with some good loads.

Man, bear season sure starts early for where you live. I am hoping to I can go in the first of October when the black bear season starts in Arizona.

Sean,

We used to use Woody's Cook-In Sauce (can't find it up here) and baste the ribs or steaks. Slow grilled with frequent basting made for delectable dining.

We do the same and love the stuff!

Sean, that is great about your son. What a great summer job. I would rather have my son doing that than working at Macdonalds H LL I would like to do it LOL Also thanks for the recipe, now all I need is some bear meat.

I often wondered if I could handle the winters ( cold and dark ) in Alaska, but I know I would love the hunting and fishing

Yup! That's it. We always used the original. It makes for delightful ribs. Shoot, it even makes beef taste good. However, black bear, elk and moose are superb with this stuff.
