Best bullet/weight/powder to load for an AR in .308

My buddy recently purchased an AR chambered in .308 Win. He has also decided that buying commercial ammo is beyond his budget and he has asked me to teach him how to reload for his new toy [and his Browning A Bolt in .300WSM]. So..... What is the best bullet to use for an AR type rifle? Will they feed the plastic tipped bullets as reliably as a "regular" spire point bullet?? What's the best bullet weight to use??

The rifle will be mostly used for plinking at short and long ranges; he was a former military sniper back in the SE Asian jungles, 100 to 600 yards probably. Should I be recommending that he individually weigh all powder charges [as I do on my hunting and target loads], or can accurate loads be produced on a Dillon 550/650 machine?? Or another multi-head press??

Are there powders that you would recommend?? Are there any I should stay away from???

Will a small base die set be required for this rifle?? Or, will a regular RCBS die set work satisfactorily??

My prior experience has been limited to reloading for bolt rifles, so this will be a learning experience for both me and my buddy.

Accurate loads can be produced on a Dillon. Just dump the first three cases charged after making adjustments then weigh the charge on the 4th, dump the 5th, then weigh the 6th to make sure it's accurate.

I think the 155 or 140 Custom Competition would work pretty well in the AR-10. Any full length size die should work. For powders I think you'll do well with a mild charge of IMR 4064, RL-15, or Varget.

As he may hunt with this rifle during the Michigan deer season, will it reliably feed plastic tipped bullets like the Ballistic Tip/AccuBond, or should I recommend that he stay with a Partition for hunting use?? Or is this a question that needs to be answered by individual trials with each proposed bullet combination??

Thank you for your insights and for relating your valuable experience; your recommendations will save us a lot of time in the load development process. As stated before I have no experience loading/shooting the AR type rifle platform. But after seeing his, I'm looking forward to the opportunity to shoot it a bit as he develops his loads and learns to use his new loading equipment.

The AR-10 should have issues feeding polymer tipped bullets. I run BT Varmints through my AR-15 without issue.

I've found the polymer tipped bullets withstand the violent chambering of an autoloader better than soft-tipped bullets. HPs work well also. I have used MatchKings, AMax, BTs, and various HPs in 150, 155 and 168gr weights in M1As and M1s. They all work fine.

I envy your friend as an AR-10 has always been on my wish list but I've always went elsewhere for my next purchase. In today's gun environment, I may never get another chance.

Not mine, but I thoroughly enjoyed shooting this Armalite AR-10.

Nice scope eh? Wow...

Match type hollow point bullets, 155 - 175 grains, usually work really well from AR-10's. Agree with those who've said the poly tipped bullets run better than bullets with soft lead tips.

The AR-10's are a lot of fun, spendy to feed since a fellow is encouraged to shoot. And shoot. And shoot...
