16 power variable or there abouts.
raised turrets (target turrets)
hash marked reticle.

scope must be rugged. it will be hunted. must be consistent when tracking.
Any thing um forgetting?

whats the best BANG for the BUCK.

thanks guys.

Like many here! I have owned a large variety of scopes over the years, some good, some not so good. If I was to purchase a new scope today it would a Zeiss. I have two and they are my best scopes far and away.

Elkman,

does ziess make a 30mm tube scope of decent power for $1000?

do I need a 30 mm tube?

how much benefit is there to 30mm

How far are you going to shoot?

The biggest advantage (only advantage?) of a 30mm tube is the increased amount of adjustment in the reticle when using a turret. If you're staying under 1000 yards you're probably not going to gain much, if anything. This is especially true if you use a 10 or 20 MOA base or similar so that you can use as much of your reticle's adjustment range as possible.

Also, you mention a hash mark reticle - is that for a specific reason such as computing MOA or MILs, or as a BDC style of use?

1000 yds is about it.. 1200yds some times.

I really like mil dot I have it another high end scope that I love. only reason is for ease of shooting at game in pre-ranged hunting areas, etc

I will probably use a 20 moa rail.

I have always been told that 30mm tubes where tougher?

thanks guys

I bought my first one on line from Camera Land, it is a 4.5 X 14 with the external turret, for less than $ 1000. CL runs a couple of sales each year, and sometimes runs deals on refurbished scopes. There are also other sources, on line.

Vortex all the way. You could get a viper hs-lr 4-16 x44 30mm tube for around 500. Our even a viper pst in that same magnification in first focal plane for about 800.00. I have recently gone through a scope phase. The vortex scopes are every bit add clear as any leupold or nikon and the higher end vortex like the pst is every bit as clear as any night force. As for rugged... you can't break them. and if you do their warranty and customer service is second to non. I had a low line vortex on a 8# 300 rum. That broke multiple sets of rings. After the third set there was a nice big gouge in the tube. The scope still held zero prefect. Tracked like new and was just as clear as the day I bought it. All that being said I wasn't sure if I wanted to trust itwith upcoming elk season and figured I would send it in to see what they said. I had prepared another rifle to hunt with thinking I would not get the scope back in time. Much to my surprise I had a brand new scope on my front step a week to the day I sent it in... I now own 6 vortex scopes and will never look back. Everyone that I have turned on to vortex lives then and has never looked back.

was kind of thinking vortex.

I have a ziess conquest and love it.

just not real sure anymore about who makes what and what is good.

Are they selling marketing or a good product.

bought a huscamaw(? think that's how its spelled.) and was not impressed at all. Sorry if I hurt some ones feelings with that but I had it lees then a year and it would not track right. couldn't hardly give it away at several gun shows and now I have no idea what I did with it.

have had very poor results from Bushnell's higher end stuff.

Leopold is my go to but they are so expensive and they offer so many options its hard to figure out what I'm getting.

enough to drive me to drink...... Sounds like a good idea think that bottle of Johnny walker black is calling my name.

Been looking at the Vortex as well. Pretty decent scopes for the money and a great warranty.

but which vortex????? I ike the first focal plane. are there any draw backs to this type of system?

You can get a demo 5x25 Zeiss HD5 for less than 1000.00 from Camera Land. That would be my choice. I've bought a ton of the demo units over the years and have never been able to tell them apart from new scopes, short of the price. I will probably sell off more of my Leupold's to buy a few more Zeiss this year. They are so much clearer I shoot them a lot better.

At present I have two Minox, one Vortex, one Bushnell, and two Zeiss.
The Zeiss are the Conquest and an HD 5. Do yourself a favor and get the HD 5. I went with the Z800 reticle as that's as far as I'll push it right now on paper or steel and easily covers any distance I care to shoot at an animal and then some.

Depends what magnification you like. I have a viper hs-lr 4-16 x 44. It's in first focal plane on my 270 win. I really like how the hold over hash marks stay consistent over all magnifications. Downfall is ffp is normally about 150.00 bucks more. Second focal plane is what most scopes fall under. But if you want most magnification possible the viper pst (precision shooting tactical) you can get the 6-24x 50 or 44mm in second focal plane for about 8-9hundred.in my honest opinion I would take vortex highest scope the razor hd gen 2 and put it against any night force, Schmidt and bender, American optics. As for price there is no comparison.

Here's a pretty incredible scope for the $.
One of the most experienced 1000 yd 308 shooters at 24 hour campfire picked up a couple of these and loves it. The reticle gets him to 1000 w/o touching a turret.
This scope gets rave reviews on other sites too.
Click on the lower left of the page to see the reticle...graduated in .5mil.

They also make it in 16x.

Those "super sniper" scopes really have made a good reputation for themselves.

This whole discussion might be better down in the Optics section of the Nosler site, instead of cluttering up the Reloading section, but hey, here it is.

If I was doing it all over again, I would look at Zeiss first and then a VX-3 would be second .
I have never owned a Zeiss but my nephew has the new HD 5 and it is as good as anything I have looked through.

Blessings,
Dan

Guy, how do I move it or does Fotis -JD338 have to move it?

Rick. I have a moeapta. and I am pleased with it but it has a "dead spot" it get blurry some where in the variable magnification, I cant seem to remember right now where but the scope other then that is nice.

how do the swfa's hold up to 338 edge recoil?

I have got to say I'm glad I asked the question as ziess and vortex seem to be what most like. Although you now have me thinking with the swfa scope....... not sure you guys are C.F.O (my wife)approved???

The original 10x Super Sniper, sold by SWFA, was rated for .50 BMG use.

I don't know much about the newer variable Super Snipers...
