best scope?

I know vortex tests all their scores to 500 Gs. Also they have a video of their crossfire line mounted in a 50 Barret and it held up flawlessly to 500 rounds of fire. My test was not on a Barrett but I can say the scope was fat beyond abused and still shot like new.

Yesthey advertised the SS scope for 50bmg. The guys that used them had one small problem. They would fall apart between 3 and 300 rounds.
Get a leupold and you really do not need a 30mm tube.

If you want a 30mm scope of high quality for about $1000? Leica is selling the ER line off on clearance for the ER 2.5-10x42. They are 30mm tubes, great optics and are selling for around $1000, depending on model, on up and are on clearance by EuroOptic until they are gone.

I just bought an 5-25 HD5 with lockable turrets from Opticsplanet yesterday. I paid just under $1000 plus they're sending me a $150 gift card. Pretty good deal.

That's funny. Cuz apparently vortex has been the only brand of scope that's 1" tube had held up to the 50bmg. I'm not saying one is better than the other. I just know from my own experiance that no other company offers what vortex does for the money. Even leupold.

More information would be really helpful to help you pick an optic.

- What are you hunting? What conditions? (Range, time of day, altitude? etc.)
- What rifle / caliber is it destine for? Is weight a factor? Are you humping it up and down mountains?
- Do you have another rifle/scope combo that you'd take in the field?

I'm a firm believer that most people run way more scope than they ever need. That 5.5-22x56 Nightforce brute looks good at the range, but man, it starts to suck when you have to hump it up and down hills and gullies all day. Even 400-500 yards is easily done with a lower power variable. You don't need 14x or 20x to make that shot.

Take a long hard look at the Leupold VX-R line from Leupold. I have them on my two Nosler rifles and they are excellent. And don't over look the 2-7 power scopes either. One of my all time favorite rifles sports a 2-7 and it's light, handy and I've had no issue at any hunting distance I needed. The Zeiss scopes are also fantastic quality. I've never regretted one I've owned.

Wayno, I have 2 of the 3-15x42 HD-5's and they are a tremendous scope. I only have about 3 hours of range time on mine with the .270 but I am impressed. I bought my two scopes for about $850 each.

That's good to know. The majority of my rifles wear Leupold glass, but 5x zoom and target turrets seemed like a good match for shooting out to 1000 yards. Can't wait to try it out.

I currently have a Vortex HS-T 4-16x44 on my wish list. What others have said, very clear, very rugged. Excellent warranty reports.

I'm definitely going to be following this thread. I'm in the market for a couple new scopes.

sent from my typewriter

My new one just arrived today. Following other threads there may be a rifle this goes on very soon

those vortex scopes look very sexy.

I found one for sale at my local shop that was on sale.

picked one up for $595.00 it the pst viper model 4- 16 44 mil/mil

mama gave me $1000.00 to spend  so I went ahead and ordered a swfa ss 10x 42

going to have a good old fashioned comparison. man I cant wait. sure wish someone would of told me how much/ HARD it is to find 30mm rings.

They are commonly stocked here in Colorado. I would look closely at the vortex match rings or the Talley one piece base and ring set. You can't go wrong with the pst scopes. They used to be top of the line for the vortex brand until they introduced the razor and razor hd. Now this year they offer the razor hd gen 2. Which is the scope that I believe rivals night force, American optics, Schmidt and bender and all of the top names at a fraction of their cost. The razor hd gen 2 offers a scope that you might be able to see the future with. 2.5-28x55 in a35mm tube.

Whole lotta good prices to be had on lots of different sites as 2013 models are being discounted a bunch ! EuroOptic also has a sale area with some smokin deals but things are flying off the sites pretty fast !!

There's going to be lots of different views on this topic, so throwing my hat in the ring my opinion is in Europe it works like this:

The best binos. and scopes are really expensive but over here most folk think, to lose a hunt for the sake of not having the best would be a poor state of affairs...so what's best? Well all the manufacturers make stuff to cope with ones shooting disciplines but the three main choices especially for hunting are Zeiss, Schmidt & Bender and Swarovski. Without a doubt the very best after sales service comes from Swaro & Schmidt. Brilliant!

Big cash outlay up front, but a lifetime of great performance and service. Cheers, ET
