Big Bore

A big bore is something I have wanted for some time and there just happened to be one up for sale.
I am getting a Weatherby Euro Mark 5 in 416 Weatherby.
She has a gorgeous stock!

I am going with a VX3 2.5-8x36mm.

Mighty fine rifle there. I'm involved a discussion somewhere else regarding big bores and one rifle for all hunting, worldwide, and this was posted:

The .375 IS THE MINIMUM for big, dangerous, African game.
If you're going to hunt something that can render you in to nothing more than a wet spot in the soil it seems prudent to go BIG BORE and lots of power.
I have a very close friend that hunted Africa a lot back in the 1970's and considered the .375 a "Starter Rifle", much like we look at the .22LR today here in the states. If I could have but one rifle for all game in the world I might very well consider the .375 H&H but think it would be on the "light" side for some game and just right for moose, elk, griz, and maybe a little heavy for coyotes and antelope.
With the variety of game the world presents this discussion does a lot to illustrate the need for more than one caliber I think.

Not to derail this thread, I think it helps to illustrate the need for large bores in certain applications.

Jim, very nice, congratulations

The VX3 will hold up well on this rifle and for all but the coastal brown bears in Alaska, the 2.5 - 8 x 36 will serve you well in the States. As I already mentioned to you, if you decide to hunt Africa, especially DG, you might want to consider the 1.75 - 6 x 32 ( Leopold VX3 ) or even a fixed power or no scope. The 1.75 - 6 x 32 will give you a larger field of view, which could be important.

sorry you were unable to find a Rigby, but a Weatherby is not chopped liver--just joking Jim. It is very nice and will serve you well--enjoy

That's a big,,,, ooooh, I like that JD. Not being familiar with that breed so much,,,is that an oiled stock ? I love oiled wood!

Hi Jim, again, nice rifle pal!..I just bought a sako 85 Kodiak in 375 H&H :shock: ..I love sako's so I just orderd one from my trusty dealer 8) ...I love the ruger #1, but it's going towards the sako 85 :twisted: ....I love bolt action rifles for sure :grin: ...Looks like this pal :mrgreen:
