Blueprinted actions

thats odd that he thought surgeon was the worst machining he had seen considering they have the most advanced equipment in the business and dominate most of the us sniping matches. that does suck because i am building my 338 lapua on a surgeon 1581 next i hope i get lucky and get a good one, and my 6.5-284 is built on a lawton 7000 the 3 for 3 at a G rifle.what action does jim build?

Whew, Had me a little nervous wonder which custom actions to avoid. Had a barreled action built last summer using a Stiller TAC 300. Stiller fitted a Shilen select match grade barrel with an 8 twist and ratchet rifling. Very happy so far. Rifle likes 140 sst's. Just bought some 140 Accubonds to try.

I'm just as surprised. I've been wanting an XL Action for another 338. I have the Lawton 7500 and it's a superb action in my opinion but what do I know.

This is just an opinion of one smith. Lot's of smith around the country swore by Surgeon. Jim's complaint was about the quality of machining. He spoke highly of Stiller and Barnard.

which one did he advise to saty clear of?
Jim Gruning told me that Surgeon is overated. Worst machining he'd ever seen. Lawton is junk as far as his concern. He swore by Barnard, Bat, Nesika and for great value, the Stiller. I valued Jims opinion. He is not just an ordinary smith. He carry his journeyman aerospace machinest certification by heart. He is the only smith I know that own an air gauge to check barrel bore uniformity. An action that arrived at his shop, whether custom or not will be checked thoroughly and run through a gamut of measuring and cross checking before he start working on them.
Had a local smith say the same thing about Surgeon actions. He said they are no better than a factory 700 action. Justin builds Long Range rigs and likes to use Bat actions.

well i will use the surgeon for my application not too concerned about the smith who said this i have seen the results from surgeon actions in the past and have no problem dropping $1770 on a xl action and bottom metal.

Jeff,
Not trying to crap on the Surgeon action at all brother. Thats just what I was told since I know next to nothing about them. I had asked about custom actions and brought up Surgeon actions. Read a few good articles about them and thats why i asked. This Guy had put barrels on a few and said the tolerances were way off?

Your not crapping on it woodycreek, your simply relaying an someones assessment. People don't wait in line to spend 5K+ on a weapon system for no reason. The surgeon is a will fire and function in any environment system. What I have heard is my guy said its the worst machining he has seen yet, there one of the few with a rail and recoil lug built in and one piece bolt handle. My guy said tolerances were way off, you can get a new functional bolt from surgeon without sending them the receiver. What I have not heard is my smith said he couldn't get it to shoot, its not very durable, it doesn't feed well, the bottom metal is junk or it won't extract correctly. Bottom line to me is this a guy can do an autopsy on a action with a micrometer and come up with discrepancies but the proof is in the performance look what dominates the sniping competitions, I will take performance over opinion anytime. Ps surgeon was just recently sold and I hope they still build them the way always have.

The built in rail was what got my attention with Surgeon actions.
Bat offers that as well, but the bat because of it tolerances needs to be kept extremely clean to run smoothly. I had a bat on my .308 baer and it was clear that a dirty environment was not where the bat shined. I have one going on my coyote gun for the fact that I shouldn't have the dust and silt blowing around in the winter.
what caliber did you build your rifle in?

I was at this Guy's shop getting some machine work done on a special project Ruger 22LR pistol. He was showing me some of his long range rigs he was currently working on. Just started picking his brain for ideas. I have my Rem 700 270Win that I want to rechamber in 6mm or 6.5 something? That action will get blueprinted and atleast a Pac Nor Select Match.

That would be a cool 6.5-06 Ackley Improved, Brian! In fact, I'm sorta pondering the same thing, on one of my .270s. Maybe not AI, though.

The 6mm-06AI and 6.5-06AI seem to be at the top of the list with 6.5-284 not far behind. Still considering the big bores and WSMs. Think I should combine the two and make a 458wsm

That 264-06 AI would make a nice build on that action you have. It would be so close to the 264, the difference wouldn't be worth talking about. Scotty

There was a guy on a different forum that necked up a 338 lapua to 50 cal and was firing a 750g amax at 1100fps.
That sounded pretty neat to me.

Holy Smokes!!! That would be the ultimate suppressed rifle! I thought suppressing the 45-70 would be cool but.....

He was running it suppressed, he said it would shoot under a minute @ 100 yards. 1100 fps doesn't sound very fast but I'm sure you could shoot it through whatever was in your way.
