Bringing back the old Weatherby

Hit some stumbling blocks. One being the checking account... No progress in a while.

Big debate is new barrel or not... Shoots fair with the old barrel. To do this right though, it really needs a new one. That wasn't really in the shooting/hunting budget this year. I'll probably just have it done though. It's only money...

Nice project! If it were mine I'd consider the legacy value in the original barrel. If the chamber and bore are OK, I'd work to develop some brass that provides what it needs. On the other hand if this will be used as a high volume shooter, a new barrel might be a good idea. BT

I guess the real question is, Guy, what do you mean by "shoots fair?" Is 1" fair? Or is 5" fair? If it's still minute of deer out to 400yds or so, I'd sure consider keeping it as is and using it a year or two more. Then you can rebarrel at your leisure. Of course, maybe your son wants better than MOD?

I've hit a similar stumbling block this year. What you might consider doing is everything you can w/ the barrel you have. Douglas will custom-taper a blank for you to the same contour as the one you have for a pretty good price. Then you could just have the chamber cut and VIOLA! Sharp shootin' days are back again!

Sure is a cool rifle though. I love that cartridge. I've got a 257 AI similar to yours that shoots the lights out, and I love the charm of a nicely sporterized military mauser! I hope my boys love this Ackley as much as I do!

Well, at the moment it won't even shoot.

Light primer strikes. So, back to the gunsmith. That's the biggest stumbling block right now. Pull trigger. No bang. Hmmmm.

Guy, I sure hope this gets off the ground, I think it is so cool. I have read this thread and I sure hope everything gets straighten out because I love the look of this rifle and I love the 257Wby. Really cool.
