I was talking to my dad a couple weeks ago and he said he was thinking about selling his BAR 22. I said for what?! He says I want a 10/22...I said ok, I'll buy the BAR from you then. This was the rifle I learned to shoot with at 4 years old. I can still remember seeing the mud fly along side the pond and squeezing out 15 rounds as fast as I could pull the trigger. I said well what do you want for it? He said I'll make ya a deal, I'll sell it to you for what I paid for it back in 88' $200, with original owners manual. Considering what these go for these days, that is a bargain. They are collectors items these days. Only made from like 77'-85' It is in really good condition Considering it's age. Few dents and scratches in the stock, small piece of surface rust on the barrel. Other than that, its in really good shape. It is based off and designed just like the centerfire BARs being gas operated. It holds 15 rounds via tube fed.
I slapped a Burris Fullfield E1 4-14x in Warne rinfire rings and headed to the range. Ended up not having enough elevation in the Burris to get a 50y zero. Was still 4-5" low. So came home, took everything apart, flipped the rings around, out everything back together. Put crosshairs back to optical center and tried again. Same result. Got to looking at the elevation travel on the Burris and its only 40 MOA.
So I snagged the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x off my wife's Kimber and threw it on the BAR 22. It has 60 MOA of adjustment and should get me enough elevation to get a 50y zero. Bingo! That did the trick. Now the only issue is the BAR is not very accurate. I'm talking 3-4" groups at 50 yards over 20 shots. With CCI Target ammo. I'll have to play around with a few different ammo types and see what it prefers. You are somewhat limited to solid points as the tube fed magazine could have issues cycling HPs according to the manual. And that might be true as the last time i had it out years ago with bulk Rem gold bullet HPs, it jammed every shot. It needs a good cleaning either way. It's never been taken apart and fully cleaned as far as I know. Brought back some good memories this morning with it while I was at the range.
