OK - please understand - this is a "working rifle" for a patrol officer. Although someday I'll likely shoot it at 300 and even 600 yards, for my purposes, it's primarily intended for 50 yards and in. Absolutely bone-stock Bushmaster AR-15, with the 16" barrel, and 55 gr ball ammo. I have some 30 round magazines, but these 20 round mags are new and I wanted to test them.

Five rounds to check zero at 50 yards, shooting from prone. Adjusted the rear sight six clicks right to correct point of impact. Next five rounds were nicely centered. Maybe a tad low, but not enough to worry about at this point. My next 30 rounds were the patrol rifle qual course:

5 rounds @ 50 yards. Start from standing. On command drop to prone, fire five rounds rapidly, center mass.

Run to the 25 yard line (real fun in the snow). Drop to kneeling, five rounds from the right side of the barricade. Change mags. Switch to left hand, left shoulder, left eyeball, left, left, left. Put five more in the target, center mass. Clock is still running.

Move to the 15 yard line. Fire five shots while moving (no stopping to shoot, shoot on the move) to the 7 yard line.

From 7 yards, pivot right, two rounds center mass, as quickly as possible

From 7 yards, pivot left, two rounds center mass, as quickly as possible.

From 7 yards step in and right, two to the chest, one to the head, quickly.

From 7 yards step in and left, two to the chest, one to the head, quickly. Transition to pistol, and finish off the target with three rounds.

That's the qual, 30 rounds or 300 points possible. I only managed a 285 today - usually don't have any problem shooting all 10's - but... I was cold & tired and this was the first time out with this particular rifle. Conditions were just peachy too. Maybe next time.

Some more practice with this rifle, and I'll be there. I hesitate posting the target with some hits in the 7 ring doggone it. Not pleased with 285, but it's a start.

*No .45 holes in this target, we used a different target for the pistol part of the qual.

Sounds like a great day to try out a new one Guy!

I was just scrolling down and noticed the double tap in the head and thought to myself " Is Guy shooting a 22 pistol?"

then I looked below and saw the "disclaimer" ;)

Guy-
could I move around a little better a "course of fire" like that sounds challenging and fun. That rifle looks all business and like a nice piece. Will you scope it for your long range shooting? Couple years ago I was at he gun club public sight in. Thought I was gonna "help" this young man get his AR sighted in...... I watched him for a few minutes and realized that I didnt know squat about adjusting an AR. He was very polite in explainig how moving rthe front sight was required etc. I asked him who taught him how to shoot and he said with a grin "well Grandpa taught me, and uncle sam taught me how to use one of these." He proceeded to shoot a group with those open sights that was as good as my best effort that day with 9X scope. Nice kid, wish I would have gotten his name, he impressed me more than his shooting.... Look forward to the next range report. CL

Yeah - all the shooting & moving and left & right hand stuff is not conducive to pretty groups... But it was fun. Then I had to get off the range, go home and warm up!

Felt much warmer this morning when I was x-c skiing, though the temp was the same, a few degrees below freezing.

Not sure what I'll put on it for optics. The standard sights are okay, but while on SWAT I was spoiled by the EOTech... Or a low powered scope would be nice too... No money for optics right now, so I have time to think about it.

FOTIS - thought you'd like it. Although short, it contains quite a few different elements to test general rifle skills. Reloading, prone, kneeling, standing, shooting on the move, left and right side shooting, use of cover, CNS shots, pivots, transition to handgun... Not bad at all, and lots of fun.

Your course will definitely hone ones skill set.

I don't even want to speculate what I'd do on such a course. It looks as if you did pretty good. You have a good handle on your work tools.

Looks pretty darn good to me guy. I would hate to be on the target end of the range !!! Great shooting

Cool shoot Guy. Qual courses are always fun and a good way to for teamates to have something to bust one anothers hump.. Never done it in that kinda cold though. Extreme heat, yes, but not that kinda cold..

Interesting course of fire......

gonna have to keep track of this thread and set this up in Texas next April.
