Went clam hunting today. Carried my trusty, long 20 mm clam gun. Hunting was great "more like shopping" got our 30 in about 40 mins. Cleaned them and refrigerated and cooling as we speak. Had a short pack about 200 feet on level hard packed sand. Beautiful afternoon on the beach.

Sounds like a great day on the "Clam Hunting Grounds" Bill! I would like to get out there with you one day. I love clams alot! Can't think of a better meal than some big elk steaks and a few dozen clams.. Maybe next year. Scotty

That would be a meal fit for a king!

There was a bit of clam hunting when we lived in the Vancouver area, but I never really got into it. It does sound as if you scored, Bill. Trust your "hunting" is as good today.

They have a very distinct taste, and not everyone likes them. The are "great" with eggs and elk steak for breakfast.

Washington Game and Fish does a great job in their management, we have a tremendous resource right on our beach. The key is decent weather, this time of the year "weather" can go from nice to really bad overnight.
the regs are also difficult to plan around because we only have about a five day window after the final approval to dig. The wind and rain makes it almost impossible to see their tracks, (water spurts) in the sand. Darkness also adds a whole new dimension.

For you Clam addicts, we had our second season of the new year, yesterday and today. Yesterday I passed because we had fairly heavy rain showers, 40+ wind but warm. Today moderated somewhat , rain and hail, wind at 15+, heavy surf warnings and temps in the 40's. Actually had to hunt for them, but took right at 2 hours for 30. I get clams and egges tomorrow for breakfast. !!!

We used to do alot of Claming down on the Alaska Penninsula and always had plenty of company everytime we went. I have picture somewhere of one of our visitors, that joined us one day we were down there Halibut fishing, and doing some claming. He was an honest 10ft Brown Bear that decided the wing strut, was a good place to scratch his back on. When he got too close, we all got into the Cessna 206, and sat there while he rubed his back and rocked the whole airplane all over the place. At that distance you could hear him breathing thur the windows no problem! If you think they look big at 50 yds, you should see them from 5ft!

Good one Bill, but most of the time here there is no sea ice or snow, just rain!!!!! Pipe is better than racing them with a shovel though.

That makes the 20 mile an hour winds look pretty easy. Don't think I would be getting many in the north.

I'm actually impressed by the cameraman who went down under the ice with that Inuit fellow! That was pretty gutsy for someone who had likely never done that before.

Oh how I love those Razor Clams. My wife has been after me for seven years to take her to the coast, You can bet your britches that when I do finally take her, its going to be during claming season! Sounds like you made a pretty dang nice haul!

Yup you wouldn't get me there for picture, no way!!!!

I was raised in a fishing village in Maine and being cod fish food was never my top priority. You would not catch me down there!
