In the Nosler manual the coal is 3.25 but measuring the coal like the manuals say my coal 3.40. I'm reloading 25.06. I was wondering if the 3.25 in the manual was max. or max for the rifle tested? :?:

That is the max length to function in all factory rifles. If your round is at 3.4" and still functions through the magazine then that is just fine.

The OAL will be different for different bullet weights and lengths however.

I just take a fired case from the rifle, dent the neck, push a bullet in the case and chamber it in my rifle to get an idea of where the bullet is touching the lands. I do this a few times to get an average and thats the approximate OAL for that particular bullet in your particular rifle/chamber.

Welcome to the forum, glad you are here.

The COAL listed is the SAAMI spec. It is ok to exceed this length, just make sure it will function in your rifle.

The COAL Will vary from gun to gun. The accuracy of your gun will be based on the oal that your rifle shoots the best at. That"s the advantage of reloadiing. The world of reloading is at your fingertips!n

Thanks all. I'm shooting a single shot rifle so there is no problem with action clearance. THANKS again.

In the majority of reloading manuals if the COL is listed in the cartridge intro with the min/max case lgt, primer used, bbl lgt tested, ect it is the SAAMI max. This is the max lgt that will fit any manufactures magazine and chamber throat that adheres to SAAMIs specs.
If the COL is listed with load data along with the bullets SD and BC it is merely the COL the lab developed the data with. Some books list both and they will show in their respected spots in the book. Both are not a cut in stone lgt that must be adhered to, but are a recommenation for a starting point when you work up your load unless specified by the writer.
