Have any of you in the Midwest found or seen an deer or turkeys that did not make it? I am guessing our turkeys will take a huge hit with all the snow and cold weather. I hope the deer can make it but I am already planning on letting does walk to rebuild if the numbers are down this fall.

Blue tongue disease is in the state, but rumors vary on the toll taken on the herd so far. Our antlerless rifle season was definitely slower than normal this year. I suspect that was a combination of lower numbers as well as a front moving through the day I was out. In any event, I saw some but didn't shoot anything.

Our pheasant population has been down for several years, and this probably isn't going to help any.

I am feeding the deer and turkeys in my backyard. Going through plenty of grain but the need the help.
We have had a brutal winter this year.

I don't really know how hard the winters are on deer...seems they've been around long enough to get the hang of it though.

Down south in TN...specifically on the place I hunt...I saw more deer this year than I've ever seen in one season, and a lot were bucks (spikes, but bucks)...we've had that 700+ acres for about 10 years now, and have been trying to manage the herd the best that 2 old hillbillies know how...it wasn't really a good place when we first got it...but now it seems to be coming into its own.

The diseases are what scare me...I've never seen any of them there at home yet...hope I never do.

I believe deer can handle winter OK...but the diseases, those are a problem.

Here in Washington and I think in most of the NW, we have had normal to slightly above normal temperatures, and "little if any snow". Cascades are way down, as is central Idaho and most of Oregon. California is experiencing spring and summer conditions. We still have a couple of months where the high country can get "significant" snow falls but as of now it has not happened. Might make for an interesting summer for me. !!!!!

here in northern NY (currently -17) we are having a much colder winter than usual but so far all of the animals seem to be doing ok.

2 good snow storms come through but the next weekend after each was a warm up and rain so right around me 6"-2' of snow so animals are still mobile just raiding any standing corn farmers didn't harvest due to poor yield/wildlife damage, i saw one spot the deer & turkeys ripped open an ag-bag of cornsilage and have holes in it over a 75' length, so all in all critters here in northern NY are doing ok

more road kill than usual due to using roads for easier walking but that isn't out of the ordinary for here

Ten degrees and dropping here in central Washington early this morning. Clear skies though. Everything is covered in a modest blanket of snow. Winter is here, finally. I'm enjoying!

We've had mild temperatures and then back to normal. When the Midwest and Northeast USA was suffering through record lows, we were enjoy days above zero; that is unusual. It has turned brisk again, ensuring that we won't have to endure any mosquitoes or black flies for a few weeks. It was -25 C (-13 F) overnight; that is near normal for this time of year.

Three this morning. Think I'll put on thick socks and warm long johns before work!

Back to normal for this time of year: -28C (-18 F). Ah, well, the tropical weather was nice while it lasted.

Indeed it was. My tree-hugged bicycle buddies were convinced that global warming was finally here.

Not saying much about that with our zero degree temp at sunrise.

Well it got just a bit colder after the sun came up. -18F now. Absolutely gorgeous out though with the sun. Not a bit of wind so that's nice or it would be bitter out.

Mr. Sunshine isn't warming that thermometer very much, David.

No Mike he is not, but it could not be any "warmer looking" than it is. Just gorgeous. Wish I was up in the hills on snowshoes trying to call a coyote or wolf. A cold got a hold of me though. It too shall pass!

Agreed! We've been oscillating between -15 and 15 above; it warms up just enough to snow then cools back down. With the cold air, you can see darned near forever.
