Conflicking stories on the .458 Protected point by Nosler!

On another forum a poster wrote he was told by a Nosler rep the 458 Protected Point for the 45-70 was meant for velocities from 2000 to 2200 fps?I talked to a rep that said from 800 to 2300 fps.

Whats up?What are the intended velocities of this bullet in the 45-70/450 Marlin?

It is a very hard bullet. My dad loads them in his 45-70 Marlin 1895 as 'mean-n-nasty' elk loads. They run hot and fast and perform like you'd expect a Partition to. I don't know why you would even have one running below the 1700fps level in a Marlin. I know that the .44 bullet of the same design opens reliable at around 1300fps out of my 8" 44 Rem Mag, and the 45 cal does the same at 2000+ fps out of the Marlin.

I run my 300 Noslers at 2100 fps( I had to slow it down to match my other loads) in my Guide Gun.I was asking for another who is cautious in his reloading.I know the Winchester 300 grain CB Partiton Gold doesn't run that fast out of factory ammo and was curious about the regular Partition at lower velocities if chosen.

The 45-70 300gr Partition impact velocities are from 700-2300 fps . The rear section is incredibly tough and will stand up to the higher velocities. And the front section will open down to 700fps impact velocities, making the Partition an incredibly versatile bullet. In the Nosler Reloading Guide #5 Mark A. Keefe, IV took a moose at 27ft with no bullet recovery, his hunting buddies took four other moose out to 125 yds. My first big game was taken with the 45-70 Marlin Century Limited III. It's a great round and you'll like the 300 gr Partition in it.

I agree. The 300 is a light bullet for 450 velocity loads.

mshaffer-When the 45-70 or the 450 Marlin are loaded to there potential, it is "over" the recommended velocities of the 300 grain Nosler.The following data done by Rick Jaimison handloading the 450 Marlin with a test barrel.As you can see at 2488 fps in a 24 inch barrel.Now if you use the Cowboy version(26 inch barrel) your in the 2500 fps category.Thats where a 350 or 400 grain Nosler would be the cats meow like the 350 Woodleigh/Swift A-Frame/Hvy Kodiak and North Forks come into play as well as the 400/405 A-Frame/Kodiak and Woodleigh.All these great bullets made for the new velocities of the newly popular 450/45-70.

Loaded to its potential,the 450/45-70 is a force to be recconned with for large game at medium ranges with bullets like the new 350/400 Nosler PP's that withstand the new velocities. :lol: :lol: :lol: One can hope anyway!!!
