I stopped in and met Bruce Thom of BAT back when they were just getting started. He was a pretty nice guy and definitely knew precision action building. They had some nice equipment as well.
they are great actions built by great machinists. i had one on my 308 baer and am using one on my middlested and 6.5x47 switch barrel set up. the latest is a right bolt left port configration. tolerances are insanely tight on these so keeping them clean is a must.
Jeff -
If the tolerances are so tight, would it be better to use a Surgeon action if I am building a rifle that will double as a varmint and F-class rifle? I am a bit concerned with some of the grit that can build up in a day of shooting out on the prairie in a p-dog town. I doubt I can shoot well enough to realize the differences in the machining tolerances between the two actions as well.
the bat just needs to be kept clean where as the surgeon will function better when dirty. you may want to look at the defiance action like we talked about on the phone those are smooth as silk like the bat but not as needy in regards to cleanliness. the reason i went with the bat on my coyote rig is the fact it will be used in a winter and generally cleaner environment. the bat actions are one of the most accurate and well built actions out there you just need to keep them clean. so if your out in a prairie dog town or a match chances are you will have something to clean it with when need be so i wouldnt worry about it.
