Deer Rifle for this Year

Either rifle will work well, but if you're hunting elk out west where the shots can be a little farther than the deer woods back east, I'd go with the 300 H & H. I've taken game with the .358, and certainly I've used it to take some big animals. However, the shots were well under 200 yards. When you are elk hunting, you often need a cartridge with legs.

I'm killing the hell out of a round 8" AR500 steel plate with either rifle at 300 yards from field positions. Of course I have to use a little hold over to get there with the .358. So far I haven't killed an elk outside of 250 yards yet that is why I'm practicing at 300. I took the old 4X Weaver off of the .358 and threw on a Vari-X II 3-9X40 to use this year to make those longer shots a little easier.

I don't doubt that you're ringing the gong at 300 yards. The 358 is certainly capable of that. I just like the extra velocity you'll generate with the 300 H&H and a stout 180 or 200 grain bullet. 'Course, my advice is pretty much worth what you paid for it.
