I finally drew a tag after the last few years getting nothing. I drew a local cow moose tag. The only down side is I'm going to have to borrow a boat to get back into this area. If possible I think I'll let my 11 year old son fill it. There is nothing better than cow moose when it comes to wild game meat!

Awesome!!! What does a resident cow moose tag cost? Do you have to register or just call in after the harvest?

Draw applications are 5 dollars a try with total of 6 tries for moose, different amount of tries for bears, bou, bison and griz. You have to send in a hunt report card or file online.

Whenever we draw a cow tag our chances of doubling up on moose in a year go way up. We got lucky with a legal bull last year.

It will also be nice if I can get my boy in on his first big game animal.

Congrats!
I eagerly await your post regarding this hunt.

Ive already got my boy doing rifle holding excersizes. I took the ice scraper and hunt a water bottle under it. Makes for a makeshift replacement for holding the rifle. He is pretty small and has a hard to holding the rifle off hand for any length of time. I told him he has to be able to put 5 in a 10” circle at 100 yards before he can do any moose shooting. He generally shoots of sticks but I want him prepared for the chance that he might have to shoot offhand.

Congratulations! You are absolutely correct that it is difficult to imagine any meat better than that from a dry cow. Trust your lad connects.

...you might want to consider setting him up w/ a "hasty sling". I use the Butler neoprene slings, drop your elbow thru, twist your wrist, & it locks your support arm directly below the rifle, w/ most of the weight supported directly by bone, not muscle, when it's adjusted. Not "perfect", but it's a lot steadier than not supported, & I can hold my rifle in position for minutes w/o fatigue...

The main problem is my son weighs 70 pounds soaking wet, his rifle weighs 7 pounds. So 10% of his body weight. That would be like me shooting a 35 pounds rifle. It would be a bitch to hold steady, but if I can get him strenghened up a little bit it sure will help. I won’t actually let him take an unsupported shot at any game animal, he has shooting sticks he can use standing or sitting and there is always various objects of support in the field. The stronger he is the better off even from supported positions.

Josh- if he's anything like my son was... that 11-12 year saw him go from 70 pounds to over a 100 and get quite a bit stronger. Hoping he's ready to roll come fall!

Now he's working on 14 and has outgrown a shotgun, a .22 and is working very hard on outgrowing his youth stocked 7-08!

Nothing better than a cow Moose hunt except a cow Moose hunt with your son .
I am looking forward to a great story with a few photos I hope !

Blessings,
Dan

Here is the first picture, preparation! Building up those rifle muscles with his ice scraper faux rifle with adjustable water bottle weight system. ;)

Figure since it was 34 and raining I might as well get some use out of the ice scraper, and he can use this after school while I'm at work.

Best of luck on the moose hunt.. Everyone does things there own way and kids grow at different rates. When my nephew first started shooting I had him fire off hand at a target at 50 yrds. Then I showed him the kneeling position and shoot a second target at 50 yrds. Even a 12 year old can understand the importance of being steady when comparing the two targets.
I maintain that good practice( rim fire too) is the most important and hearing protection does more to help improve a youngsters shooting .
