Dumb question.....UPDATED with range results

Tom, I just remembered you have a Roberts also. so i had to log back on and tell you, how cool would it be for a daughter to have a 257 weathery, another with a 257 Roberts and the other one with a 25-06. dont rebarrel it, keep it and buy the weatherby This is also a good plan to get your wife on board with buying the weatherby--the whole idea is for the daughters LOL

I suck at keeping secrets....here's what I'm picking up tonight...

That's a 1V in 25-06. I had entertained the idea of AI'ing it or maybe making it a WBY, but in the end, I think it's best left a 25-06, as I do entertain ideas of going p-dog hunting when I can get the chance to get out for lopes and prairie poodles.

The deal with it is that the current (soon to be former) owner bought it as a barreled action and bought a stock from Macon precut for the No 1. It needs some final fitting, a finish applied, and a recoil pad. I feel comfortable taking on that project.

Now, here's the reason I jumped on it....

He wanted an AR15 upper, and I've had one laying around for several years that I keep promising to do something with. I bought it, complete except for bolt/carrier/charging handle, for $125 about 4 years ago and it's been doing a lot of nothing.

I am getting the No. 1 pictured above for the upper plus $125, so I'll have that rifle, as pictured, for $250 out of pocket.

:)

I always figured the only way I was going to get a .257 Weatherby was to rechamber a #1, then Remington came along and offered a Stainless SPS in it. I still may do a #1, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a 1V... 99.953% certain it would be a 1B or K1B.

Very neat, Tom. I do like the 25-06, for sure. I believe (though it pains me to admit it) that you are correct in keeping it as it is.

This was a "target of opportunity" for me. I don't have any kind of varmint gun anyway, so I could do double duty for deer with it if I wanted, and use it for varmints and such if I have a mind to. OR, I can finish it, enjoy it for a while, and then continue to "trade up". ;)

Tom,

DON"T DO IT. Its a bad deal.
Give me the sellers name and I will talk to him for you.

Man, that is a smokin' deal for sure.
A nice oil finish and a good recoil pad (for looks) and you will have a dream rifle.

One thing to consider is the 25-06 AI. It will give you a step up in performance, making it a real flat liner. If you were to use it for P dogs, you could always use 25-06 loads and fire form cases at the same time.

Congratulations on your new 25-06 project.

Tom,

So long as you keep the barrel cool and clean, you should not have any issues and barrel life would be the same as any other 25-06 that is taken care of.

Tom,

That is easy,
VX-3 4.5-14 with dials or CDS.

Tom,
I look at barrel replacement as the smallest percentage of the cost of shooting. At least that's what I tell myself. If it's gone in 1,000 rounds, what is the true cost of that shooting?
We know component costs, but there are also the trips to the range (pd town?), rifle cleaning, brass prep, etc. I know that's twisted logic, but I enjoy fooling myself. From the pure guesswork aspect, I'd say the AI should have less throat erosion, as the less sloping shoulder creates a whole different dynamic when the powder burns and pressure builds. Picture a .300 H&H case next to a .300WSM - does one have more throat erosion potential than the other? Now maybe the truly experienced can speak up, cuz I'm just babbling. I'd love to have the AI someday.
EE2 (also a Tom, BTW)

Actually, what I'm thinking here is to move the Swaro Z3 4-12x50 BT off the 300H&H and get a 2-12x42 VX6 on the 300H&H, as I think that scope will make a better fit on the H&H and the Swaro on the Ruger.

Scotty's gonna be disappointed he didn't get to kick me off the cliff on this one....

If your track record is any indication, he'll get another chance shortly.
