Scotty's gonna be disappointed he didn't get to kick me off the cliff on this one....

If your track record is any indication, he'll get another chance shortly.

THAT IS FUNNY!

I usually at least make Scotty work for it to get a "win". He's still frustrated over trying to get me to get a 35 Whelen. I give him some interest for a bit, then forget about it. Keeps him focused there moreso than other places he could be needling me.This should really derail him for a little bit.

I see my post was deleted somehow, so let me try this in a more political correct manner

Many of us who work for a living must save many years for a different rifle. It would be nice to have every 25 caliber available I guess, but most of us will do what it sounds like you will be doing, Buy the rifle and use it and then perhaps later on when you have saved some more money re barrel it. I believe you are on the proper course, and the one most of us can relate to doing.

you got a very good deal on a good gun.

Yes it was deleted... It is not a matter of political correctness. It is a matter of not singling people out sir.

I like this version better. Thank you.

I suck at keeping secrets....here's what I'm picking up tonight...

That's a 1V in 25-06. I had entertained the idea of AI'ing it or maybe making it a WBY, but in the end, I think it's best left a 25-06, as I do entertain ideas of going p-dog hunting when I can get the chance to get out for lopes and prairie poodles.

The deal with it is that the current (soon to be former) owner bought it as a barreled action and bought a stock from Macon precut for the No 1. It needs some final fitting, a finish applied, and a recoil pad. I feel comfortable taking on that project.

Now, here's the reason I jumped on it....

He wanted an AR15 upper, and I've had one laying around for several years that I keep promising to do something with. I bought it, complete except for bolt/carrier/charging handle, for $125 about 4 years ago and it's been doing a lot of nothing.

I am getting the No. 1 pictured above for the upper plus $125, so I'll have that rifle, as pictured, for $250 out of pocket.

:)

Keep it as is. You will get 3200 fps + with the 110 AccuBond. That is fast enough for anything. I am a firm believer that bees (except the 240) need a 26" tube. Your 1v has a 24.

Last time that I went prairie poodle hunting in Wyoming it was with a .250 Savage (Model 70) and the 85 grain Nosler BT. They did a fine job on those varmits to 400 yards. Now I have a .257 Roberts (Browning High Power) and get 3390 fps from the 85 gr BT. It should be flat shooting and do a fine job as well, to any reasonable range.

That is long time/range Charlie!

Just messing with you.

Fotis. since I was really sick last month, my brain is fried in some strange way having to do with typing. I never was at all skilled in typing, now I am dangerous! I have no idea what is going to come out, especially when I am tired.

So....should the No1's forend "float" the barrel in the barrel channel, or should it be fitted?

THe stock isn't far from ready for final outside shaping/sanding, and now that I have a buck on the ground, this would be a cool rifle to take out for some doe in our rifle season (starts the Monday after Thanksgiving)....if I can get it all together by then.

Tom, Number Ones's are a law unto themselves as to how they will shoot and what is required to do so. I just bought a Ruger Number One in 9.3x74R which is scheduled to get here (to my FFL) on Monday morning. Mine is at the other end of the spectrum from yours, in that it shoos 286 gr bullets but it has been 40 years since I have owned a Ruger Number One. With yours being a custom stocked setup and foreend, it is hard to know. How is it set up now?

I get 3390 fps with the 87 grain bullet from my .257 Roberts. You should get at least 150 fps more with the 87 gr BT Nosler. The 87 grain shoots pretty well wih IMR 4350 in the .25-06.

My rememberances about these rifles and accuracy from back then is that each one is a world unto its own! Most of them shoot pretty well if they are set up right by the factory. None of them stay in group when they get hot.

Charlie,

The fore end is tight to the barrel in the barrel channel, and the inletting at the end near the action needs a little bit of attention for it to fit properly. It's pretty tight around the barrel, and I was thinking I'd open that to remove contact, then if it needs contact, I'd bed it in the barrel channel.

The wood is still "proud" of the receiver. It needs shaping to bring it back to more standard-looking contours.

Tom, FWIW, I would shoot the rifle with the present forend configuration first, just to assure myself that it does not yield terrific groups. Once you have removed the wood, it is forever removed. Just my cautious nature peeking through. I guess this is irrelevant?

Most Number Ones are set up with the hanger being the only thing that touches the barrel. At least this is how my two very early models (serial number 383) were made. I suppose for production purposes this works best to make them faster and better. Correct me if I am wrong, as I have limited experience with the rifle type.

Anyhow, whatever you decide, I hope that you are able to decipher and make that rifle sing, accuracy wise. I will start working on mine for accuracy next week when it arrives. They are are at opposite ends of the caliber spectrum and I am curious about what works, being a relative novice with Number One rifles? Keep me posted.

You might ask Yukon huntress, she apparently has all the 25 calibers. I am sure she will have an answer

guy on ggvg by the screenname of fastppc, had a 22 ppc #1 that shot amazing, he always described floating the forend and keeping the back end against the receiver fitted tight, he used dish soap bottles to make washers to keep barrel contact to a minimum.
RR

Tom - the most accurate factory rifle I ever owned was a Number One varminter in .25-06 - that rifle would put three, 100 gr Sierras into .3" 100 yard groups. I made a mistake and sold it...

H4831 was the powder that produced the best accuracy.

Hope yours does as well. They're a little heavy for general purpose hunting, hauling it up and down hills, but wow - very nice from a rest.

I think I will do just that, thanks for the suggestion.

FOTIS and Guy, good info! Thanks, gents! I think I will make sure it's got even contact, get the rear face of it fitted to the receiver, and give it go. Should probably fit a limbsaver now while it's bare wood?

For deer hunting, it's not ideal, but no heavier, i don't think (haven't put them on a scale) than a pre-64 Winchester, really. Wouldn't be my main deer gun, but for situations like this year where my one buck tag is already used up, it'd be a neat alternative. I'm also thinking it'll be good off a box stand rail, treestand shooting rail, or sticks for my girls. The weight won't bug them, their dad is the pack mule (lol), and it'll tame recoil and promote stability during shooting for them.

Man, I'm jazzed about this rifle now!
