Dumb question.....UPDATED with range results

I think one of the keys is not allowing the forend wood to contact the receiver...

Whatever the case, a lot of Number One rifles shoot very well anymore. There were some poor quality barrels in the distant past - but anymore most of them I've messed with are pretty good. At least MOA. Now and again one crops up that isn't so great and needs a little fiddling to sort out.

Heck, my .375 H&H hasn't had any accuracy work done to it and has shot several 3/4" one hundred yard groups. The .25-06 with the heavy varmint barrel should do GREAT!

Yes, I'd use a grind-to-fit Pachmayer recoil pad. You won't really need the pad with a fairly heavy rifle and a modest cartridge like that, but it will finish off the rifle nicely. I'd fit it before finishing the stock.

It works very well. One of my 1B's in 223 came with one.

Nice grab Tom.. The 25-06 seems like it was pretty easy to load for as well. 115's blasting a little over 3200 makes for a screamer and should be a deer planter!

Update on this little project:

I finally got to shoot the rifle yesterday.

I finished the fore end, 5 or 6 coats of truoil, it looks great, and feels like a good, hard finish. I guess I could put more coats on it, but it seems pretty good as-is.

A buddy of mine, same one I bought my 300H&H from, is still liquidating a gunsmith's estate, and he found a No. 1 buttstock he gave me. I bought a Limbsaver precision fit, just to see if it worked, and it fit perfectly.

I should have screwed the fore end into the hanger to check fit....the result of not doing so is the fore end sits differently than I thought it would, leaving a gap at the "curve" of the wood where it goes over the lower, forward most part of the receiver. I have some acraglas, so I will mix some wood dust from the buttstock (same wood) that isn't done yet (although I think I will work on it yet) to match is best I can, and fill the gap.

I just realized, too, that I haven't taken pics of the rifle completed. I will do so shortly.

I had done some reading on here and the web on the possible "issues" to getting a No. 1 to shoot. A consistent recommendation was to get some sort of shim between the barrel and hanger. Many recommended nylon washers. I found in my tool box drawer that has "leftover stuff" in it, a supply of plastic washers that were meant to go under screw heads on a cheap metal shed I'd bought to have a quick storage location when we first bought our house.

Anyway, I slid 4 or 5 of those in between the hanger and the barrel, from the front of the hanger working back toward the receiver. They fit snugly and really like they were made to be used for this.

I stole the 3-9x40 ZA3 off my 257 Roberts for the time being and mounted it up on the 25-06. Scotty recommended RL25 and sent me some QL data on it with the 110AB I have a good supply of on-hand.

I loaded up 5 batches of 4: 57.5gr, 58.0g, 58.5gr, 59.0gr, and 59.5gr. OAL of 3.250".

Best two were 58.5gr and 59.0gr.

Info noted on the target. The shot out of the group was my fault.

Again, I flubbed a shot, knew I did, and it did leave the group. The others stayed together nicely.

I was surprised by recoil. Not bad, for sure, but much closer to a 30-06 than I would have guessed.

I'm thinking of dialing in the seating depth on the 58.5gr load and see if we can bring that one down even a little smaller.

According to the QL data from Scotty, these loads should both exceed 3200fps with the 110gr AB. That should do a number of hooved critters, and if I find a coyote or such, I bet he won't like it either.

;)

Great shooting Tom.. Looks like it came together pretty quick.. I think you have a winner there..

Thanks, guys.

I do think I'm going to re-run 58.5gr with a few seat depth increments and see what it'll do.

I recovered 2 bullets from the backstop yesterday after shooting. Comparison of the tails with an unused 110AB tells me I found two of my bullets.

The larger one weighed 56.6gr and the smaller one weighed 38.5gr.

T - great to see you got your project #1V to the range. Looks like you're going to be able to tune up a load with the RL-25 with ease. I spent some time with my 25-06 this summer after years of ignoring it and it has sparked a great deal of respect which I missed when I first picked up that rifle. I've found good loads using IMR-4350 and the 115gr BT and RL-22 and the 110gr AB. The BT load was overwhelming to two WTs this fall and both exited after a smashing through a shoulder.

Dirt backstops are pretty rough on bullets and those two ABs held their own. I shot the 110 AB into some jugs using a 257Bob and posted the results. I'm extremely confident that they'd perform well out of the 25-06.
