Getting excited about my upcoming cow elk hunt here in Washington. It's a late-season tag for "antlerless elk" and is good for an area only about 15 miles from our home. Yesterday afternoon, my wife and two of our friends were in that area, in my Jeep. Our friends are real shutterbugs, with super-duper cameras and lenses. Seems they got some good photos of bull and cow elk! It was good to find a herd of about 30, on public land, less than 300 yards from the road...

Sure am hoping to tag my fourth big game animal of the season in a few weeks...

Rifle decision... Waffling here. I'd kind of committed to using only my .30-06 and 165 gr Ballistic Tips for all four hunts this year: bear, pronghorn, mule deer & elk.

But yesterday on a whim I took the .375 H&H Model 70 to the range with us in the morning and put a few 235 gr Speer bullets downrange... Mmmmm.... That thing sure shoots nice... Not that I need the .375, but it's classy and cool. Not sure. Probably stick with the .30-06 Rem 700, but...

We're all pulling for you, Guy, regardless of which rifle you take. Either will definitely perform for you.

Guy, I am so looking forward to your up coming Elk hunt as you always have great photos and even better adventure stories(y).
Good luck my friend remember have Fun, shoot Straight and most of all be Safe !

Blessings,
Dan

I'll vote for the .375.... elk are about as big as you've got in those parts and if not an elk then what?

My partner used a .375 firing 260ABs for caribou this year.

Over-gunned? Probably, but the results were emphatic to say the least. No tracking required.

Guy,

Best of luck to you on your upcoming cow elk hunt.
The 375 H&H with the 235 gr Speer would be an absolute hammer.
Why not?

Good luck Guy. Hope you smash a good cow. I'm voting for the 06--- you've got a heckuva track record so far this year.

Any caliber with an H & H behind it works well for me, so I say take the 375. however before the H & H's was the 30-06 which worked pretty well for me and has worked pretty well for you, so either/ or should do the job.

regardless of which rifle you use I am sure you will return home with Elk for the freezer

It would be hard for me to leave the .375 H&H behind on an elk hunt........................

However, any rifle in Guy's hands would be effective.

Guy I always take my 375 along, unless I take my 06 along, just in case the Jarrett has a hiccup.
I love the 06, but I'd vote for the 375, just for fun.

I would take the30-06 since you could end the season with a real mix of North American game harvested in one year with one rifle. Now the question is I know you really like your 25-06 & 30-06 in Remington 700 CDL's but could you have a Remington 700 CDL in .280 Rem in your future ? Split the difference one rifle to do everything ? It would give you something to work on come this winter.
Good Luck with your Elk hunt.

Ya, I'll probably use the .30-06 700 CDL. Love that rifle and the matching .25-06 700 CDL. I do think it will be great if I take an elk with that rifle this year. That will be four big game animals with the same rifle and load, in two different states, all in one season... I like that idea!

I don't plan on buying any more 700 CDL's, those two rifles are quite sufficient for my hunting needs.

A .280 would do the job of both! But then I'd only have one. :(

OK, kill the cow with the '06 (to complete your "one rifle hunting season slam") then roll her up on her legs/belly and shoot her with the 375 and the 235 speer! That way you will (a) get your Mod 70 "bloody" which is really needed to make a rifle a good killer! and (b) see how that Speer holds up, you already know how the 260 Nosler works in you Ruger! Go for it! :)

Guy,

If you had a CDL in 280 Rem, you would then have 3!

Not to mention another choice to make as to which rifle to carry next year! Sounds like fun to me!

I've long thought that identical rifles in 25-06, 280 and 338-06 would make a great 3 rifle battery. Of course they would all have to be left handed CDL's!

Good luck Guy, whatever you choose to carry.

Pretty hard to beat those cartridges unless you add a 9.3x62 in.

Guy -

Anything that makes elk hunting easier is a good thing!!!

As far as guns go, stick with the .30-06 and round out the season. I for one am curious to see how the 165 BT performs on elk. Don't let us down!!!

Thanks and good luck -

Dale
