I just received a F1 chrony as a belated Christmas present. This is the first chronograph that I have had. What do I need to know to operate it at its peak performance?
Keith

Don't shoot it.

set it up on a tripod10-12 feet from the muzzle, make sure its level and in line with your shot, and keep the battery fresh.

That may seem silly, but I've shot 2 so far. When you look through the scope, make sure you clear the chrono my more then you think you'd need to. Keep in mind the bore is well below the scope sight picture at 10'.

Bruce has given you the straight skinny. If you haven't shot a Chrony, you haven't been testing your ammunition. Eventually, they do get shot. I keep spare ears for my Chronys. It seems that the wire is forever being shot, almost always by someone else. Not much to wringing them out, Keith. Consequently, media stuck in the case and/or unburnt powder can penetrate the electronics. I use a plexiglass cover for the front of my Chrony to keep from putting media that had been overlooked through the electronics.

Got a picture of the cover DrMike?

Thanks for the input. How much of a difference do sky conditions make?
Keith

On bright sunny days you will need to use the sky screens, and on cloudy days you don't need them. Sky conditions will not effect readings, just do the above.
I shot my F1 and upgraded to the Master Chrony, both are excellent products.

Make darn sure it is opened up ALL the way, if its not absolutely opened flat, it will read high! Mine was restricted
By the tripod a tiny bit and it was causing it to read around 200 fps high! ( 2.7 degrees restriction to be exact)
Good luck and have fun with it!

I line mine up as I think it needs to be, as noted above. Then I turn my scope power down to the lowest power and look through the scope.. Very revealing if I am misaligned either right to left or vertically.

Also, I have invested in wooden dowels to replace the metal rods that came with my Chrony. They may need to be worked sown a bit to fit as I have not found the the exact fit in a wooden dowel.

Best of Luck and enjoy..

Take a marker and scribe the rods at the minimum height to shoot through. At the range, providing it's a bolt action rifle, take the bolt out and view the rods through the bore, instead of the scope. Haven't shot one chrony yet. A couple of extra/three feet away will make a big difference in 'error' readings, when the muzzle blast interferes, but won't mean a lot in your readings.

Aside from that...enjoy and be ready to be humbled as to what the books told you were shooting, and to what you actually are.

If you were to buy another what brand and model would you buy ?

The Magnetospeed. Really want one of those suckers!

I have a LabRadar waiting to go to the range with me. I hope to find out what it can do in the next several days. I have an Oehler 35, and it doesn't get set up as often (except on occasion when I'm doing forensic work and can justify the proof system). I have two Shooting Chrony Beta Masters and they do most of my work. The Magnetospeed would be interesting, but I haven't been bitten by the bug ... yet.

If I didn't know better, I would have thought that you guys would want me to kill the F1 so I could upgrade.
Keith

Keith, have you killed it yet? I know I'm way late on this and you probably already know that if you line the F1 up so the brass slip joints on the sky screen rod holders are the same height as your cross hair in your scope you should be good to go. I take a length of string 10' long and use it to set the correct distance from the rifle to the F1.

I have not killed it yet (y) I have to admit that I have not even had a chance to get to the rifle range since I got it  .

My chronograph is neither fancy or expensive, but it seems to do a good job for me. It is a ProChrono Plus.

Now if you feel really brave when you are using it, you can also put it down-range at say 300 yards like I did to see what the actual velocity loss was at those distances, and not just using calculation on the bullet BC and muzzle velocity of the bullet to figure it out. Been lucky so far! (y)

Like many others, I don't know how I lived without one of these things for so long. They truly do assist in helping a guy get an accurate and consistent load in his rifle. Best of luck.

Oohhh... I'm dying to hear your report on the lab radar! I have one promised to me for a birthday present!

Re "shooting" a chrono.... I've never done it but I have some nicked up guide rods! I thought one of my buddies shot one of my chronos one day.... it tipped over like a ton of bricks after a shot. A short while later we found out the muzzle brake had separated from the gun..... it was a prototype built by our local gunsmith and never to be repeated lol.

Did premeditated murder on an Oehler model 10, two negligent chronicides on F1's and one accidental chronicide on another F1. The Oehler had been back to them three times and usually after a month it would go haywire again with weird reading. I deliberately introduced it to a 180 gr. Sierra Pro-Hunter. I noted that that chapter spoke rather disparagingly of the F1. Funny. I ran a comparison with the one I have now with my buddy's M35 Oehler and reads were quite close. All I'll add is my F1 is sufficient for my needs.
