Family afternoon at the range

After spending Saturday morning training some reserve police officers, I was met at the range by my wife and youngest son. For the next couple of hours we did a lot of shooting with our favorite rifle, a .22 Marlin 39A, as well as with the .22 Ruger semi-auto pistol and even my .45 Kimber. Sure was a pleasant couple of hours.

Mama doesn't get out to the range real often, but she was very accurate with the .22 Marlin, and not bad with the .22 Ruger pistol either. It's kind of funny, with all the different guns I have, that we all enjoy shooting the .22's the most - by far. A set of small swinging steel disc targets kept us challenged and entertained for quite a while, with just a couple of boxes of .22 expended. Real nice.

Young John went through a box of 12 gauge as I tossed clay pigeons for him too. Good fun! Not only is stuff like this good family fun, but it helps young John build his shooting skills, for those important fall hunts! Just thought I'd share - and hope you get out to shoot with family too.

Looks like a great afternoon to me. !!!!!!!

I spent yesterday afternoon at the fleece market in Wichita Falls texas, (temp 105) home next week.

Great day Guy! Can't wait to get out with the boy once I get home. Not sure if Mama is into it right now in VA. Temps are pretty high and I am not sure I want her holding a firearm if she gets cranky from the heat! Scotty

Great! I will be doing the same thing tomorrow.

It is always good to share time at the range with family. Consequently, one of the most accurate 22s I ever shot was a Model 39A with a ratty old scope on it. The scope was so dark, it was difficult to see the target in full sunlight. Nevertheless, with Eley ammunition, it put five rounds into one ragged hole at 40 yards. The worst group was about 1/2 inch. The rifle had belonged to a fellow's grandfather, and it wouldn't cycle. I was asked to take it to the range during other work and test that it cycled well. I was certainly impressed by the accuracy of that beat up old rifle.

Yeah, it was pretty warm yesterday, 90's here I guess. My wife really doesn't like warm temps, but as long as she stayed in the shade with that rifle she was fine. Had a little breeze blowing, which helped tremendously.

Agree on the 39A, it can be a real accurate shooter and just a very nice rifle all around. I've got the little 2.5x Leupold on it now, but I believe it was easier for everyone to hit the little gongs when I had the 6x Leupold mounted. Need to save up for another one of those.

Family and shooting go together well. My wife and I started shooting together when we were dating over thirty years ago, she made me look pretty bad one day with my own .357 mag revolver. She was knocking over pine cones and shooting empty cans off a log up in the hills like she was Annie Oakley or somebody. I was talking about that with her father over a beer later in the day and he said to her "Honey, didn't you tell Guy about your NRA competitions? Go get your shooting medals to show him."

Sheesh... He'd had her shooting NRA .22 rifle competition, for years, and she never bothered to mention that to me... I taught her how to use the handgun, but her ability to line up the sights, hold steady and squeeze the trigger all transferred right over from rifle shooting to handgun shooting. I felt kind of... silly... at the time.

Guy,

That is what you call quality family time. Looks like it was fun for all.

Looks like a great time Guy! Those Marlin golden triggers really are a work of art! I have one that was my dad's and I just love it.

I did a bit of shooting Sat. morning with my little girl as well! I Can't wait till she gets older! Would give me a great excuse to get a 22LR!

A great family sport indeed!

The end result is what matters Guy; you've got yourself a terrific clan! Being shown up by a girl with a gun is one of those moments that puts a person head-over-heels, and even more so when she doesn't even realize it.

O'Connor wrote some similar sentiments about Eleanor's first successful hunt:

"Then and there I learned about women from her. I have decided that old Charles Darwin was right when he said that the female of the species is more deadly than the male. They are calmer, their nerves are better, and when they are trained, as my wife is, they are usually better shots."

Great picture Jake! You are going to have your hands full buddy! Those little girls were put on Earth to bring Dad's to their knees! My daughter is 6 and already knows the right way to get exactly what she wants, anytime, anyday! Scotty

Yeah, a daughter has a way of intertwining herself around her daddy's heart. Sons are great, too.

Cuter than a bug! She needs one of those little Chipmunk .22's to shoot!

Thanks for sharing Guy. That looks like a lot of fun. I've been thinking about a Marlin 22 as they seem to make a really nice rifle! Obviously you and several others have had good luck with it. Mind me asking how much a new one would run Guy?

My boys always complained that my daughter got a way with things that they never did :) . Yep, it's true.

My wife says I let the daughter get away with more than the son. Probably a little, but the boy wore me down and made me soft I think. He is a fire and forget weapon now... The daughter is the demon! Scotty

Funny! My wife said the same thing. Each child is an individual, however.

Well, at least I am not the only pop's with a super soft spot for daughters. My boy is so darned good most of the time, he really needs very little rudder steers. Now, the daughter, well, she has a hard time finding the boat! Scotty
