Just beginning preparations to load for a friend's .270 WSM. he has been shooting Federal Vital-Shok ammunition, and had around 3 boxes of once fired brass. I have always loaded either Winchester or remington brass, and am unfamiliar with the Federal. Is it worth loading? Anything "special" I should know?

Welcome to the forum, highcotton. Reload the Federal brass without any particular concern. Some have reported that it is "softer" than Winchester, but I use a fair amount of Federal brass. Now that they are offering it as a component again, I have quite a bit on order. The Gold Medal brass offered some years ago was quite good. Perhaps they will offer it again.

I used quite a bit of it for my 338 Win Mag and found it to be of good quality and seems to be pretty tough. I have gotten quite a few firings through it without any drama. Scotty

Mostly I use it in the .308 Win, and concur that it tends to be both thick, and a little soft. I have however built thousands of very accurate loads using it. Plenty good enough to shoot good scores at 600 yards, and also plenty good enough for longish range game shooting.

Use it extensively, mostly with my 223,308 and 300 Winchester Magnum. I found Federal to be a tad better than any American made brass, especially the discontinued Gold Medal line. Federal brass has less volume and on the soft side so take extra care when reloading them. You'll hit max sooner than expected.

I have been shopping for Federal .270wsm brass, but all my suppliers are out. They tell me they can't keep it in stock, so that might tell you something about the popularity of Federal brass. I can find plenty of Win. brass in this caliber.
