Got out early this morning to get a little glassing in for a coyote before heading off to work in Denver... caught this guy out in a bailed corn field mousing. Put on a little sneak, found a bale for a rest... put the nice orange triangle on the shoulder (Trijicon 3-9x40)... unleashed the 70 grain NBT... dog down!

This is the first coyote with this rifle... an ADL package gun in .243 that I transplanted into an old BDL-V stock... load was 42 grains of RE-17 in WW brass for about 3600fps. Bullet didn't exit... at least not intact... there were a few places where some jacket exited... but pelt damage was minimal. I didn't range it before the shot... I knew he was definitely in my wheel-house... turned out to be 285 yards which is inside the triangle on the Trijicon.... turns out that little glowing post reticle makes a pretty nice sight picture on fur.

Been almost a year since I shot a coyote... with work and family time gets slim... always gets me fired up. This one was large... 47 pounds and 50+" nose to tail... big ole male...

Songdog,

Congratulations on the first coyote of the year.

Congrats on a great coyote and great shooting. Those Trijicon's sound pretty good for coyote hunting... Scotty

Nice shooting and nice rig.

Did you modify the floorplate/trigger guard on the ADL to get the BDL stock to fit? Been wanting to do that for awhile but always chicken out because mine shoots so well that I don't want to change anything.

No modifications necessary... I had a complete BDL-SA bottom metal assembly lying around (mag box, floor plate, follower). There is a bit of a gap between barrel and stock... because it's a sporter barrel in a varmint stock... but I don't really care, the old BDL-V stock is the best stock Remington has ever made... bar none.

Scotty.... I like the Trijicon... but truth be told I definitely prefer a crosshair of some sort rather than the post style reticle.... my favorite being the Burris Ballistic Plex. But... it was a free scope.... and I strongly adhere to the moto: "if it's free... it's for me!"

Edit on previous post: Load is 46 grains of RE17 behind a 70 NBT... not 42 grains as I posted earlier. I shoot 42 grains of RE17 behind the 50 NBT in my Swift... hence the confusion.

Free Trijicon! How fortunate you are.

I guess "free" might be a bit off... he gave me the glass in trade for some 'smith work on a rifle. I mounted a new piece of glass on his Rem. 700, bedded it, trigger job, and some load development... but I would have done all that for free anyway... so I guess getting the Trijicon was a pretty sweet trade!

Nice work! I'm shooting 45.5 gr RL-17 with the 70 NBT out of my .243. Bugholes.

That is a great looking dog!

Nice job on the dog and keep up the good work. We work away on them here also with a .243W . Here is what they look like around here in the winter time.

Cool picture of the yotes. My pops is pretty busy in the trapping season as well with the yotes.

This was some of his take last year.

Your Dad did well Scotty, what's the brown critter at the top on the second coyote in, A big marten?

That, also, was a fine take. Those pelts are premium. Consequently, those are good sized dogs.

Its a fisher I think.

Fisher's are pretty rare around here, thought it looked a bit big for a marten, neat critter.
