First Reloads at the range

Yup, I don't rest the rifle on anything hard, anywhere. Sandbags are about as solid a rest as I use.

That's a great first range report!

I use a Harris bi-pod at the range, to hunt with, and to hold the rifle during cleaning. At the range, I use a rabbit ear bag at the rear. For a light kicker and while shooting off a bench, I try to not touch the rifle any more than I have to. Once the rifle/ammo have proven themselves, I'll practice in the field without the shooting aids used at the range.

I also recommend using a target/aiming point that provides for more precise sight alignment. For me, that is usually a 1" white square within a 2" black square printed on non-reflective beige paper. BT

really have my head spinning with this load.

shot the load again 2 days ago and had a lot more spread.

I think I found a better rest, 50pound sack of grass/clover seed really allows me to create a cradle for the rifle so the only movement I was getting was the straight back of the recoil vs the side/side action but still leaves a lot to be desired (bulls bag is on my purchase list)

It was a breezy day, and shooting down in a gravel pit i'm sure just creates havoc with wind patterns coming in swirling around then back out but still didn't expect quite the spread at 100yards that I was getting

BT- deff good idea on the target aiming point, 2 days ago I was just using the bottom patch of duct tape on my target as my aiming point, 1.5-4.5X even at 4.5X a 2" square is pretty small at 100yards

Hopefully cleaning the rifle, shooting a few 22rounds off the make-shift bag and finding a calmer day things will come back inline again and get to a point that i'm satisfied for now and ready to work on my Nosler BT's for deer season

You'll be good Tim. Try the 6 O'Clock hold with the lower power optics. Instead of trying to cover the bull, plant the bull on top of the horizontal crosswire and you might have a better aiming point. I use that for alot of shooting since I don't use alot of magnification in most of my optics.. Using that method allows me to shoot pretty far.

As you can see not a perfect group, but certainly one that will do it's job as long as I do mine.

Will come back to it later once i'm more experienced and have a better rest set up, going to load up a handful of these and then start working on some 95gr BT's see which I do better with, do a bunch more shooting with this rifle take the better of the 2 rounds and take it out for the whitetail here in NY, then hopefully the 338-06AI will be done in time for me to work up a load with that before thanksgiving so I can take that to PA for deer & bear

Take a close look at the Bulls Bag X7 System.
viewtopic.php?f=40&t=20077

I use it for crop damage hunting and it is rock solid with a rear bag. Shown is the 700 LSS 338 RUM loaded up with 250 gr AB ready for action. Its 870 yds to the back corner.

G'Day Fella's,

Tim629, if you are obtaining reasonable velocities with the 40.0 grain load, I would stick with this and go Huntin!
When it's all said and done, there is No substitute for Accuracy in building Confidence!!!

Well done and I hope that helps

Doh!

JD after seeing your rifle set in the X7 I think i'm going to have to put the Pro model on my list, I was originally thinking the bench model but I really like how it sits up a bit. Like the versatility of the X7 but I think reloading equipment, plus 2 rifles and a scope.... lets just say if the wife knew what I have spent this year i'd be in a bit of trouble but she also knows they were 1 time big ticket purchases and i have no more rifle plans in the foreseeable future

The secret, Tim, is to get your good lady and/or the children involved in shooting. Then, "It's for you, dear." Or, "But honey, it's for the children!"

hoping to get my pistol permit she really enjoyed shooting her brother's semi-auto in alaska this spring, even though before I even read this post I offered to take her up and let her shoot her dad's .223 (she's a goofy left eye, i'm right but her dad just got a nice ruger hawkeye in 223)

but one of those if she knows the price I get the "is it really needed" and if she doesn't know the price she just doesn't worry about it, all she worries is we are putting money in the bank at the end of the month and not spending on junk. She knows my theory is a few nice rifles (built by her brother so that helps) and then I will have what I want/need for a very long time also sold 1 rifle and was gifted a bit towards a rifle from my parents so the final $$ figure is high but the sale, gift, and sentimental value that will come with these 2 will be worth it.

Just tell her guns are no different than golf, you can't play the game.e with just one club. :)

Good one, Jim!

You'll be in good shape with a 243, 280 and 338. Can't see you ever needing much else. Wanting is a whole nother ball game though.
