Foggy range session

Did some of my own handgun & rifle training today, and worked with a new shooter as well. Wanted to go long with the .308 Green Machine, but was lucky to even see the target at 100 yards, let alone 300 yards or more. I'm not entirely sold on the Vortex yet, but am going to give it more time. Put the Vortex on the Green Machine, and am pining for the old familiar 4.5-14 Leupold that's been on it for nearly 20 years... Sigh.

It was a great way to spend a cold, foggy, rainy day!

A day at the range has a way of refreshing the mind like few other pursuits. Good post, Guy.

It is a .22 1911, sold by Sig Sauer. Very nice little plinker, and a perfect practice pistol instead of shooting my .45 1911 all the time. Great for new shooters!

Bob Marvel makes a top end that uses a 1911 frame and converts any 1911 style frame to a .22 rim fire. I have one on one of mine for practice and they shoot bug holes. I've used mine in Bullseye matches when I had my 208 Hammerli in for a tune up.

Yes, an old beat up, greatly appreciated 2.5" .357 mag. It's been a good, hard used gun.

The other revolver is an old .38.Chiefs Special.

I've got a soft spot for S&W revolvers.

I packed one around like that for a long time.... dang I miss that gun. Best of it's type by far.

When I am at the range time seems to just fly by. I always get renewed after a good range session.
Thank you for the post!
Guy I have been reading about all the rain out on the west coast it sure looks to be soggy hope you are able to stay somewhat dry!!!

Blessings,
Dan

Only dry indoors lately! But this is the Pacific Northwest. It's supposed to rain and snow.

I'm going to hold off on that for a while and see if it's just me.

When I've spent more time with it at the range and in the field, I'll know. I'm just not entirely comfortable with it yet.

Guy, I still have a 4.5-4x40AO Leupold that I bought in 2001. It is still a good scope and has not been hunted all that much since 2003. I am just keeping it on my .204 Ruger, CZ 527.

I also have (3) S&W, J-Frames: .22 Kit Gun-3 in, .32 H&R Mag and .38 Spec Model 60 both 2 inch. Two titanium and one stainless. They are my carry guns.

I too said "OOH" when I saw your 1911-22.

I want one of those, my letters just keep getting lost on their way to the North Pole. ;)

Those .22 cal 1911's are really fun and useful pistols. The same gun is sold for even less money, about $340 or so. The Sig Sauer version I've got goes for around $400. Sadly I didn't even know about the GSG labeled version, but I like mine just fine and consider it $400 well spent.

It does prefer the higher velocity jacketed .22 ammo, like CCI Stingers. Low/standard velocity ammo won't always cycle the action reliably.

Guy,
I'm running a VX3 4.5x14 with a 30mm tube on my 280AI and it is a whole lot brighter than the 1" tubes I've been running on my other rifles. Haven't run a Vortex but it's on the list to try.
Scott
P.S. Love those classic pistols and I think the kids may learn to shoot a pistol using a Para like yours.

Doesn't GSG make that pistol for Sig? What do you think are the major differences between the two?
I've got the 1911 itch and a .22 makes a lot of sense to me. For the time being anyway.

Differences?

Exterior finish. Mine say's Sig Sauer on it, and cost $60 more than the GSG version... Other than that, they're the same thing. I like my pistol, but would have saved $60 if I knew about the GSG version... Live and learn.

It's still a good gun. I recommend it for any 1911 fan, either the GSG version, or be silly like me and spend more money for the same gun labeled as a Sig! :)

Why did you change scopes, and what happened to your Leupold? You could always put it back on?

Oh, Leupold is still here.

My thought is to try this Vortex scope, which seems like one heck of a scope, on my most accurate rifle, my "Green Machine" .308 Win. I'm warming up to it...

Yes, the good ol' 4.5-14 Leupold is still right there, still in the Badger rings. Ready to get tossed back on the .308 if necessary! Kind of hoping to use it on a rifle I seldom use, a .300 WSM Model 70.

Just a little scope shuffle, and trying something new for me.
