I just returned from the range with my FN 30-06 that I had loaded 20rds of 180gr PT with 54grs of W748. Fired very well shot two groups at 100yds consectively and each group was 2" high and were a 1.0" groups. Not to bad for the first time I fired the Noslers.

Here is my question Winchester created game ratings I believe it a CXP 1,2,3,4 for there bullets and ammo, how does Nosler rate the 180gr & 200gr PT for what game you can take with them? Kinda a silly question but just would like to know.

Thanks ahead

Welcome to the forum.

The Nosler PT is designed for a varity of gave over a wide impact velocity range, 1800 fps min impact.
Both the 1800 and the 200 gr PT will open on on smaller big game llike Antelope and deer. Either one could be used as a single load do everything kind of bullet.

Thank you for the welcome, I guess my question is would I be under-gunned with a 30-06 with a 24" barrel and 180 and 200 pts for grizzly bear? I have a 35Whelen but I just like the 06. Next year I am going black bear hunting again no problem there but where I am going they always say "carry a rifle that will take grizzlies in grizzly type country". An 06 is a great rifle that doesn't kick your head off.

Thanks again,

Welcome Blkbear!

Perhaps Nosler will chime in on which of their bullets they would suggest for Griz. Perhaps a bullet in the 220 range out of the 06 would suffice?

The 30-06 with either the 200 gr or 220 gr PT would work but your 35 Whelen with a 250 gr PT is the better choice. The 250 gr PT will easily bust off side shoulders and give you an exit wound. This is always a good plan should you have to follow a blood trail. The 35 Whelen doesn't kick much more than your 30-06 with the heavier bullets.

The 200gr Partition is a great bullet if you were to shoot a Grizzly most will not weight more than 600lbs. But I have a 35whelen and with 250gr pt's its way better than the 06. And I will say it doesn't kick any more with 250gr bullets than the 06 will with 200gr bullets do to having a larger bore.
So what I am saying is the whelen with 200gr bullets kicks less than a 30-06 with 200gr bullets maybe less than the 06 with 180gr bullets as well.

Most manufacturers use a CXP Winchester system. I would like to know what I can hunt with a 200gr 30-06 AccuBond? Can I hunt Grizzzlies with it or should I stop a Moose.

Answer from Nosler:

No we do not. An AccuBond will work well on a moose and grizz, but I recommend a larger caliber rifle for grizz.

I'd still go with the 250 gr PT in the 35 Whelen.

JD338,

Your right I will reload the the 35 Whelen with the 250gr Nosler PT. I am thinking about adding another pound of weight to the synthetic stock. This would be very easy as the rifle now weighs with scope 8.5#'s. The stock is hollow and if I roughed up the interior and put some internal small screws inside once the epoxy dried it would stay forever. The epoxy would be very close to the end of the receiver so the balance should not be affected, very little if any. I reload lots of different calibers anything from 30-30 to 45-70 and enjoy the hobby. Its to bad that Nosler doesn't make any 45-70's in a 405gr bullet as that would really be a bear whomper.

Good choice on the 250 gr PT.

A 405 gr PT in your 45-70 would be "The Sledge Hammer of Thor"!
