Went to the range this afternoon to chronograph and zeroed the 338 for tomorrow's 1K competition. These new batch of reloads average around 2856 fps. Fired three shot at the target 525 yards away to verify my zero. The big girl was spot on. I hope the weather cooperate. Two successive matches were cancelled last time due to bad weather. The forecast is very good for tomorrow.

Here's the 3 shot group at 525 yards.

You can't ask for a better day today. The temperature hovers around 70 degrees in the morning and the wind at steady 2 to 3 mph and occasionally gust to 5-6 MPH. It did got a bit hot in the afternoon but not by much. The match director changed the format of the match a bit. The first 5 shot was fired and are recorded for group. The smallest group wins a prize. You have 6 minutes to do these. The next 20 shot was fired successively with no line break. You were given 20 minutes to fire a total of 20 rounds.

Man, the 338 gave me a sore shoulder. Between sight in shot and the recorded shot, I fired a total of 33 rounds. By the 25th round, I dreaded pulling the trigger. The kick was becoming unbearable. I'm surprised that I did so well. Although no podium finished this time, I was still close to the top. The first and second both scored 246 with 9 and 8 X respectively. The third place had a score of 245 with 4 X. I however scored 243 with 13 X. As a matter of fact, I believed I had the most X today. I'll find out when the score is publish. The smallest 5 shot group was 8 and 3/8". Mine measured 13 and 3/4". Overall though, I was please with the result of my shooting today.

great shooting, How was the wind? Did you have to make more than one adjustment for the wind shooting 1K?

Thanks DrMike. I did great but not good enough to finish on top. There are 50 others that are vying for the top spot and all are pierce competitor

That is way to cool! Great job and I bet it was kick in the pants!! er shoulder! That was fine shooting. I'd love to try something like that myself but that would mean having to get another rifle!

What calibers did the first three places use if I may ask?

The wind was at full value right to left. It was a steady 2 to 3 mph with occasional gust of 5-6 mph. I dialed 1.5 MOA for wind and just watch for wind condition. My 338 is very forgiving rifle. It kept my shot centered

All the top spot was dominated by the 338. The first place winner was shooting the Sako TRG. The 2nd place finisher was shooting the custom 338 Norma Magnum. I'm not sure about the 3rd placer. I believed it was a 338 Lapua also. We spanked the 50 shooters today.

Thanks Dave.

The top 3 were all 338. The first place finisher was shooting the Sako TRG using the 250 grain Sierra MK. Followed by a custom 338 Norma Magnum shooting the 300 grain Sierra MK. I believe the third place finisher was also shooting a custom 338 Lapua. I shoot 300 grain SMK also.

You should try it. My buddy had been bugging me for a long time but I never thought of myself as a competitor. Turned out that I really like it.

Man that looks like a blast! You've got one sweet shooting rifle and caliber Rommel. Nice shooting

Awesome DF and great shooting. Get good at the wind and start shooting that 6.5/284 with 142's. No more dreading trigger pulls...

Rod, the 6.5 has the no. 3 contour. Not sure if it can handle heat from continued firing. I have the 300 Win Mag waiting in the wings if I decide to go that route, or just swap the barrel on the big girl. I have the 7 WSM just gathering dust that came with the 338. As you know Nate won the North Dakota National with that barrel.

I just place and order for 7 WSM brass. As soon as the brass gets here I'll start working on the load. I believe, Nate use Reloader 22 on 180 grain Berger VLD. I will try to substitute Reloader 25 instead, and see what kind of velocity I'm gonna get.
