We have had some crapppy weather for the last few weeks so I havn't got to shoot an much as I want, but today was a birght sunny 20 degree day. Took my wifes 7-08 loaded with some 140 ABs, my 280 Ai to chrony some 140 BTs and some 160 ABs, and my 338 WM with some 225 Abs.

We'll start with the 7-08. As you guys know I have been having issues with it. Tried Big Game before with the 140 AB and it would shoot good one day and them really bad the next. I bedded the rifle and never came back to the Big Game. Well I came back to it today and bedding that rifle did it a huge favor! Three of the four loads shot under one inch, and all made nice triangles. I started at 46 Grs and worked up to 47.5. All loads used 140 AB, win brass, 210, and had a COAL of 2.800.

Fisrt group was the middle, then the top, then the bottom.

Top group was with a max charge of Big Game. Bottom group is the 120 BT deer load that has been used for the last few years. Works great!
The question I have for you guys is which load do you load up for bears and elk? They all shot about the same, speeds on all were exceptable, the only difference was the SD of the loads.

Next up was the 280 AI. I knew these loads shot good, but I wasn't sure how fast were. Ended up getting a 3150 five shot average, and a .6" group with the 140 BT! The 160 AB didn't shoot as well, but the five shot average was .9" and cooking along at 2950 fps. Really pretty happy with both of these.

Last was my 338 WM. Was messing with H4350 and the 225 AB. Tried two different COALs. 3.360 and 3.330. Both loaded with 71.5 gr. WLRM primers, and Nosler brass.

I would really like to thank all the good folks that helped me with the 7-08 and the 338 WM. I have a hard time if things don't start happening pretty quick. Thanks for al the input and encouragement! I love this forum!

Only thing that could make my day better is if my Seahawks can upset my friends Rams tonight!

It is good to see that you are on track to find acceptable groups. For bear and elk, I prefer heavy for calibre bullets. I would opt for the 140 grain AB over the 120 grain BT in the 7mm-08. 0.9 inches for the 160 grain AB is certainly acceptable. Again, for elk and bear, I'd opt for the heavier bullet. You are really getting some pretty good groups with the 338. Congratulations.

Jake,

Nicely done buddy, way to hang in there!

7-08 go with the lowest SD and play with the COL

280AI Nice loads, work with the 160 gr AB COL and I bet it will shoot even tighter.

338WM More jump is good, you are on the right track!

That sounds great, hope my 7mm08 works much better after it gets the bedding done.

I guess the trick is indeed patience!!!!!!!!!

Nice shooting Jake, I would use your 7-08 with the 140gr AB on bears without any issues and elk within reasonable ranges. Looks like your 338 is really shooting well now, great speed and accuracy! Scotty

Thanks guys. I don't see the 7-08 getting used on elk or bears past 300/350 yards unless my wife decides to practice more. She did a fine job this last fall at 280 yards on her doe, and has made leaps and bounds in her shooting skill over the last several years. I figure the 140 AB should be good enough for black bears, and elk out to that far. I think I'll retest the three loads that shot good at 100 yards at 200 yards and see what kind of results I get before I start messing with AOL. Based on that I'll pick the best load and go from there.

I'll pick up some more H4350 as the stuff I used I made a "test load" swap with Remingtonman for. Looks like I should be able to get the 338 WM to shoot prety good. Can't be to upset about 2890 fps either!

I was really happy with the 140 BT in the 280 AI, and think I can get the 160 AB to do better as JD suggested. This gun has shot very well from the get go, but I had trouble establishing my max charge (might of got a bit greedy  ). Now that I have it figured out I'll tweak with the AOL to see if I can tighten it up a bit.

As much trouble as these had givven me and now shoot this well, I fully believe that I sold a very pretty, and fully functional 26" barrled 270 WSM. Guess I'll chalk this one up to lessons learned, and try to have more patience next time...

AND MY SEAHAWKS WON! What a day!

I am intrigued by the above statement you had a group size of .79 just how much better are you looking for? I am thinking that .79 is really good!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm very happy with the size of the group if it doesn't get any better thats fine. The two in one out thing bugs me though!

Jake,

Now its time to tweak!
Seat the bullet deeper by 1/4 turn on the seater. It may take a few tries but I will bet you $1 that you can pull that one in.

A whole dollar!!! Man, you are really putting it out there Jim!!! Scotty

Well I tried the same can of H4350 and seated them a bit deeper and the groups opened up. I bought a new can of powder and went back to the AOL that shot good the first time and did a five shot group. 2.5" ! First three went just over 1.75". Fourth was in there and fifth opened it up a bit more. Going to try going down a half grain and see what happens. Think I'm on the warm side as the nosler brass is thicker than winchester brass. If I can't get a repeat group around an inch I'm trying a new bullet.

Jake,

Nosler brass is heavier, drop back a couple grains.
