I honestly chuckled a little when this was finished because without anything for scale it looks like a leather rifle scabbard. Im happy with how it turned out, couple of slips but all good. Got a little ahead of myself stitching, was going to add some cartridge loops. It will serve its purpose just wanted it in a holster for dropping it in the pack or on the side.

I know a couple of fellas on here do leather work . would you guys tell me , what I could use to soften a leather wallet ? years ago , my Dad had one made and could not get used to carrying it in his rear pants pocket . recently Mom gave the wallet to me . I can't use it , it's like having a piece of 1/2" metal in my pocket , and it was empty , I didn't put anything in it . thanks guys .

Some sort of oil I think would do the trick, but I'm not sure what kind would be best. I have heard people use neatsfoot oil specifically for leather, so I think that is a good option, but I have never used any. I have used food oils like coconut oil (don't over do that or it can start to bleed out as a pasty mess) and I have used olive oil to soften my leather work gloves, treat leather furniture, and soften baseball gloves. I'm not sure that food oils are the best option, I just have used them because that is what I had. I haven't had a problem with olive or coconut oil though, except that overduing it can cause it to bleed off, which is extra weird with coconut oil.

If you have any of Murphy's oil or their saddle soap. You have to work it in over multiple applications, but it works wonders.

There are various types of leather conditioners available that could work.
I would try and avoid food oils as some can go rancid.
Neatsfoot oil is what I would recommend for leather.
Also it sounds like the wallet may be thick?
A half inch empty wallet is kinda thick and if that is the case there isn’t much else you would be able to do I don’t think.

thanks for the suggestions fellas .

neatsfoot oil is what I had thought of , but wasn't sure. I think I have some of it . I use the liquid Murphys oil soap to bath my dog , so I have this .

the wallet is not as thick as it feels . I think it will be good once it gets some curve in it to match against my body . I just can't use it enough to break it in .

I second the neetsfoot if you have some already, other options would be some boot oil/conditioner, I like Obenauf's leather oil for softening and helping break in leather
