hey fellas,

I am wondering has anyone used Hart rifle barrels. I am going to have my 300 Rum trued and barreled and have been thinking about having Hart do it.
since this is my first to have this done i would also like to pick the minds of the guys as to who i should considered to do this and why. I dont want to get into the learning curve here, done right the first time is the only way to go. Thanks guys.

My M700 280 AI has a heart barrel and is the most accurate rifle I own.
The man who put it together is Rob Canze of Williams Gun Sight, Davison, MI. 810 653 2131.
He also built a 30-06 AI for my LE buddy and a 338 O'Brien a member here, OU812, all 1/4 MOA shooters.

Rob knows what it takes to build up a super accurate rifle, very down to earth kind of guy. I told him what i wanted and let him take care of the rest.

Hart makes a fine barrel, especially for the money. They are the only major company that uses the push button rifle system.

Although I generally use Krieger barrels, a Hart did a mighty fine job for me. Accurate, and lasted for a lot of shots.

I've heard nothing but good results from the couple of guys I know who sent their rifles directly to Hart for the barrel install. Personally I prefer to order a barrel, then have a good local smith chamber & install the barrel. That way I'm not sending my danged rifle all over the place. Personal choice though.

Hart makes a mighty fine barrel and has for a long time.

Regards, Guy

You are definately going about it the right way. Do it right the first time even if it's a little more than what one is thinking.

Sending the rifle to the barrel MFG would ensure a decent job no matter the MFG - their reputation is on the line.

If you choose ot have it done locally ABSOLUTLY do your homework and get references!

JD mentioned a highly reputable Smith / Business.
I've been fortunatel enough to live close to Greg Tannel @ GreTan - Greg is manufacturing the equipment most of the good facilities are using.

Let us know which direction you choose - The .300RUM is a shooter for sure!

Like JD I have a 280AI with a Hart barrel. It was my first rebarrel and I sent the whole gun off to Hart. It is a good shooter and I particularly like the way they marked the barrel

Since then I have rebarreled 4 other guns with Douglas, Brux, Shilen and Pac-Nor. With these 4 I ordered the barrel and had it sent directly to a gunsmith. You will get a lot more interaction with a gunsmith than sending the whole gun to Hart or some other barrel manufacturer.

Personally I am most impressed with the Pac-Nor 3 groove. It is super fast, fouls less and cleans quicker than any of the others. But my next barrel will be a 5R or 5C barrel just to try them out.

For me there is a certain pleasure in the individuality of each gun but they all shoot. IMO the most important thing is to get excellent gunsmithing.

I have a Heart barrel on a Rem 700 in 308 Win that is very accurate and clean up is a breeze. Very smooth barrel.

I appreciate all the comments fellas. i would like to find a good smith near fort worth but so many of the listings are places that don't actually do anything other than install scope rings and think they can bore site a rifle. Word of mouth in this area has to be tempered against whose mouth it came from. If anyone inside this shooting network has some one 100% reliable and trust worthy i absolutely would consider that. I would like to have multiple people to compare and sort through. I simply want the most accurate 300 RUM platform i can afford. I have the cartridge and the stock now i need the barreled action to be just a potent. I would like to know what the best bullet, twist rate, barrel length , trigger and any other things to consider while doing this build . I really appreciate every ones feedback one this

I would shoot nothing but 200-220g bullets through it. I had a 300 RUM for a couple years and put 1200 rounds through it. I really like the 200g AB for a do all hunting bullet, and either a 210g VLD or 220g SMK for a target bullet that can double up as a LR game getter as well.

Depending on how much you want the rifle to weigh on barrel length and contour. I would go with a minimum length of 26" on out to 30" I would personally split the difference and go with 28" like I did with my 338 EDGE. After you add the brake, its pushing 30" all together which is long enough and the extra 2" of bbl helps these powder hogs quite a bit. If you want a 30" bbl go for it, its cheap velocity. As for contour, something along the likes of your standard sendero contour, or #7 or 8. Might want to get her fluted tho.... I think a 1-10" would be ideal, it will easily handle the 220g SMK and 210g VLD bullets, as well as the 200g AB.

At one time, the Benchrest world were dominated by either the Shilen or the Hart barrel. I believe there were more championship won by Hart barreled rifle than any other brand. Although I never own any, I won't hesitate to use one on future build.
