Help! Advice needed....

Ok, so I found a great deal on a vortex viper pst 4-16x50 MOA scope and ordered it....it was going to go on a 22-250 that I have....in the process of waiting for the dealer to get one in stock I found a deal on a 338 Lapua I couldn't pass up and this scope is now going on the Lapua. So, now I have a 4-16 pst that should be in to the dealer on Friday, but I'm thinking the 6-24 pst would be a more appropriate scope for the long range work this rifle is intended for. I contacted the dealer and he said I could switch scopes but that it would be a "long wait" for the 6-24. So my question is, is 16x enough power for 1000+ yard shooting? I've only shot out to 800 so looking for some advice from those who have some long range experience.

The way I see it, one can shoot to 500yds with 4x or 6x fixed scopes. So a 16x will be plenty for 1k. More is not always better, I believe.

Believe it. I ordered a 4-16x and 6-24x at the same time, and the 'little' scope showed up about a month before the big one did.

Some shooters in the past used 10x for 1k shooting. a 16x scope will be fine.

Thanks. After talking more with the dealer and finding out it was going to be 12 weeks or so to get the larger scope I decided that the 4-16 would work just fine! And after thinking about it more, I figured I've shot out to 800 with a 14x scope just fine, so it should work. And if I decide later down the road that I need more reach, well then I suppose I'll have a good excuse to buy another scope!

You'll have more than enough magnification. My goodness, even with my aged eyes I'm able to see pretty clearly with 10X at that distance.
