I am looking at reducing my TC Encore/Contender rifle collection and get back into bolt actions. Currently, I have a M70 7mm Rem Mag that I love and will never part with.

I would like to have only 2 other rifles- one for predator and the other mainly for deer and occasional predators.

Should I go 223 or 22-250 on the light rifle and 243 or 7mm08 on the medium side?

Also of the two, would you go M70 featherweight or M77 Hawkeye?

Randy,

I would go with the 22-250 and the 7mm-08 in M70's.

I would go with the 223 for varmints since it it cheaper to shoot than a 22-250 plus you can choose a faster twist barrel which means it will be able to handle a wide range of bullets. For medium game the 7mm-08 would be much more versatile than a 243 when it comes to bigger animals and you could still shoot the occasional predator with it. The Winchester boys will be along soon :) I really like the Ruger Hawkeyes much better but in reality both would be good. In my experience the Ruger 's shoot better when they are free floated.

Jim nailed it, in my estimate--22-250 and 7mm-08 in Winchester Featherweights. (I'm one of the Winchester boys. )

nvbroncrider, no heavy varminting. I spend most of my off season time calling and hunting predators. One thing I left out is that my wife will be keeping her encore with 7mm08, 22-250, and my dedicated night hunting 22 hornet barrel with scope light.

.223 With a 1-8 twist. barrel, tons of companies make quality ammo with heavy bullets. this will turn your .223 into a 22-250 past the 500 yard Mark. medium rifle 260 rem would be my route if I were to load for it. if I were not a reloader the 7-08. orit even the 308 win would be my picks.

Couldn't have said it better myself on the .223. I'd add 6.5X55 swede in a quality mauser sporter or vintage commercial make from FN, Husqvarna, etc, New Tikka or Sako rifle for your medium pick as options. 260 rem is a fine round also, but the swede seems a bit more versatile across available bullet weights from what I've heard due to magazine and throat lengths primarily. Avoid a M96 mauser based actionn if you plan to run handloads to the max. They are well built but not as strong as M98, Tikka or Sako rifles. The cock on closing is also hard for some to get used to.

Since you already feed a 7mm-08, that might outweigh the ballistic advantage the 6.5 or 260 rem will have at longer range.

Of the ones you mentioned I would go .223 and 7/08. I am a Ruger fan but the Winchesters sure are nice so I am no help there.

CDNN has a limited stock of Ruger Hawkeye .260's right now, just incase you wanted to substitute a .260 for the 7/08. :)

I am with the other Winnie guys. For a right hander the model 70 is a great rifle :)
And I would personally take the 22-250 along with the 7mm-08!

Blessings,
Dan

22-250 and 7MM 08...

I haven't bought a "new" rifle in four years but all my Remington 700s and Mod 7s shot sub MOA... :p
Speaking of Mod 7's.....I cannot wait to see how your new one shoots

I am all for Model 70's! BUT, but I got the TC Venture in a 22-250 this past time around. They were the only ones with a 1-10 Twist in a 22-250. It might not be the prettiest rifle, but I bought it to get beat around in a truck, quad, on foot, ect.

I probably could have skipped the 22-250 and just went with a 243, but I haven't ever been without a 22-250 and didn't wanna start now.

The 7-08 would be a sweet one though, since you already have so much time with them, you have all the needed components.

Oh, and another point, I am not sure this is the place to come to for downsizing. I have heard that a few times and most of the time, your safe will bulge from the opinions you get around here!

When I mentioned downsizing, except for PJ and a couple of the other older guys, there was deafening silence from the OCD, enabler crowd. This is an awkward and touchy subject for most of these guys, bordering on involuntary mental stress and clutching of selected security blanket rifles in one's gun safe.. Obviously this in not the forum for spreading inventory depletion talk, unless you are selling to buy a nicer setup!

"Downsizing!" "Downsizing!" The moderators are going to have to clean up the language on this site pretty quickly. The air is turning blue! If this continues, I'll be afraid to direct young ( had to edit that one) shooters to this forum.
