do any of you guys have experience with a Bavarian mountain hound ?

Awesome on blood trails.

What is the intended use?
We are talking about one of those, right?

They are pure specialist. Bred for one purpose - bloodtrailing. And they need to be occupied.

Here in Germany, the breeders select very carefully who gets one of the puppies.

If you want an Allrounder, there are better choices

They are surely a handsome hound. If I was younger so that I could be more vigorously engaged with the pup, I would be inclined to look at this dog.

Are you allowed to blood-trail with dogs?

Otherwise, that one would be the wrong choice.
They are bred to follow wounded game for miles and either take it down, or bind it.

For general hunting and occasional trails, there a better dogs.

yes , that's the dog . I also though they were a fine looking dog . I've read they are supposed to be a great blood tracker . smart dogs , won't leave the wounded trail for a different hotter trail . I've thought for years I'd like to have a dog that would blood trail game . I'm a bow hunter at heart and thought this might add something to my hunts . I'll have to look for sure to see if Pennsylvania did pass the law allowing leash trailing , I'm pretty sure they did . I also get in on a blood tracking or two trying to help friends . if the law passed , Pa was supposed to have a list of trackers that hunters could call for help . I'm not sure I want to get into that though . so the dog would blood trail wounded deer 3 or 4 times a year , and be a pet .

Honestly - for a few trails a year I would not consider one of those.
They will get bored and might cause problems.
The ones using them here are on at least 10 times of that number.

Most hunting dogs manage a trail of a few hundred yards with proper training. Might consider a teckel. They are fighting way above their weight for tracking.

I had to look to see what a teckel was . that dog did get talked about in what I've been reading , we call it the dachshund . what I've read , talks more about the wirehaired dachshund for tracking .

Dachshund is another name for them. Or Dackel.
I was with a troupe of them on various driven hunts. They even push out boar 10 times their weight.
Depending on the training, the flush foxes from dens and are surprisingly good on blood trails.
A friend used to export some to the States from time to time.

But they are a bit challenged in steep terrain. And some of them have a character...

Official German name is Rauhaar-Dackel.
Rauhaar means wire-haired.

My dad had of all things a half dachshund half Yorkie lap dog. He trailed over 20 deer for people, and found them lol. He went everywhere with my old man, even rode in the truck with him when my dad hunted deer with dogs. They were literally inseparable. My brother bought a pretty high dollar jagterrier I think thats the name, and that half breed dachshund tracked circles around it haha. Good trailing dog is nice to have, but sometimes it stinks when someone calls you all the time to use your dog lol.

Cleveland , there is probably more of this than a guy realizes . I'll guess some dogs are just born with the instinct .

A Deutscher Jagdterrier would look like the picture below.
They are used for driven hunts quite a bit here. I have seen a few that were rather aggressive. It is said most do not die in bed.
Use is similar to Teckels. They go into dens, too and are a bit stronger, so they have a better chance if it is occupied by a badger.
Btw: the 'Dachs' in Dachshund means badger.
Tells what they were used for, thought I think the Badgers won a few times.
But back then dogs were not part of the family.

Thats the dog my brother has. He can blood trail, but he is very high strung and sometimes over runs the track. Sometimes he is known for running uninjured deer too lol. He does have alot of heart though i have seen him jump on a few that still had alot of life left in them haha. He even got mauled by a coyote once while blood trailing when he was off the leash. Luckily brother caught up to them and was able to shoot the coyote off him.

They have highly trained dogs and do many searches every year and do special tests.
They are the only ones allowed to cross borders of hunting grounds to follow game and finish them off if needed.

Usually, the most just want a few bucks for gas, that's it. It is their passion to work with their dogs and we are very happy to have them if things go wrong.

Reading this I think it is time to train Rala a bit more! She likes trailing, but is definitely no hunter...

What is Rala, a breed of terrier? Beautiful dog, ive always love the tricolor coat on a dog. Alot of our running walkers we used for deer when I was a kid had similar color coats.

She is a Jack Russell, but wasn't bought as a hunting dog 5 years ago by my girlfriend.
Back then I didn't know her and she wasn't a huntress.
We play a bit with her, but I did not have a search for a few years, so we didn't have the chance to test her on a real trail.

I remembered starting this thread a few days ago, and wanted to show you guys what we got . we've had her for about 1 month . she is a 1 year old 80 pound ,yellow lab . she seems to be fairly smart , eager to learn and please . she's never been in a house , and was house broke from the start . in this first month she has learned ; a new name . her name was a big fancy thing , Prudence blah blah blah . she is now Sally , and comes when called . she learned sit , lay , stay , no , drop it . stay is not too bad unless she gets distracted . Heel is a work in progress , she wants to be on my right side. her nose is always either on the ground , or up in the air . she has followed ,and found, a couple raw liver drags . the liver drags were not very demanding at all , but she shows interest . she likes to go in the woods , and loves the water .we walk every day , weather permitting . if she doesn't get her walk , she gets bull headed . sometimes when we get home it's hard to tell what color she is , had to get the hose out a couple times . a little big for a house dog , but she's fitting in well .

If you are into small game hunting, she will be great and I am sure she will manage shorter blood trails with some training, too.
